Dad, husband, Yorkshireman. Cumbrian. Ex-national newspaper art director delighted to find himself living halfway up a Lakeland fell after 30 years in London Beer, Vespa, history, hill, life, lake, bike Libraries gave us power
This is definitely my favourite beer that's named after something I've never had
I've been through to Keswick On a bus with no name Felt good to be out of the rain
All Saint's, Orton. Popped by on the way back from the dentist. Swallows building nests and free tomato plants in the porch. Wainwright described Orton as one of 'Westmorland's loveliest villages'. No argument from me.
I used to spend my Saturdays trying in vain to coax ancient Italian shopping bikes into life oh hang on
And this from M&S. Decent hot day tackle. And - refreshingly - not a single mention anywhere of reinheitsgefuckingbot
Minimal mowin'. I just don't see the appeal of a lawn like a bowling green. And neither do my chums the blackbirds.
Gettin' our solstice on at Long Meg And Her Daughters. What a very special place.
Ten years ago I was a cog in the Brexit machine, on a national news title that was very much a Leave cheerleader. I'm not proud of it. Even the veteran hacks I worked with on the overnight shift for the referendum thought we'd remain. I had this quiet protest, stuck to my office ID.
Ok. The Thomas The Tank Engine merchandising has gone too far now.
'WH Smith? That's a name I haven't heard in a long time'* *Except in airports and stations
My favourite David Hockney work. It depicts Hockney at the counter of the Sea Catch fish and chip shop, Eccleshill - where it hung on the wall from 1954 (when it was gifted by Hockney) to 1970 when the shop closed.
My old work ruler, which demonstrates sans and san serif font sizes in a Yorkshire accent so that I can understand it.
In The Club in Keighley. My dad's mate randomly drops that he went to night school to study art. In the class was David Hockney. "He was miles and miles ahead of everyone else. He wore a top hat and cloak with red silk lining". Yorkshire stuff.
This rather lovely bar has opened in sleepy Northam, just up the road from where my in-laws live in Devon. Bit of a surprise, to say the least. In fact I couldn't have been more surprised if the Pope had opened a pie shop. Packed, and only been open a month or so. Brewing their own beer soon.
Nothing says 'early summer in Cumbria' better than a roaring fire in the pub
