The “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” episode from the first season hit exactly the balance of comedic fantasy adventure and social commentary this reboot was trying for. Also, the first season explicitly casting the Elders as villains and rejecting the “evil=genetic” rhetoric of the original was refreshing.

I’m sorry but also not “Ruin the Friendship” is not just good compared to the rest of the album, it’s good, period. It’s well-produced, the songwriting is for once economical and effective, her vocal performance is very good. I wish anything else on this album lived up to it.

For everything else negative I can say about Magic Mike, it proved that Channing Tatum was an actual for real Movie Star and Actor. It is a genuinely good showcase of his talents (and also his “talents” but let’s not be vulgar). Steven Soderbergh knew what he saw in him and how to bring it out.

I don’t think there will ever be a great or even good production of Chess (I’ve definitely talked about this on here before). That being said, it has quite a few absolutely incredible songs (Nobody’s Side, Anthem, Where I Want to Be, I Know Him So Well, Someone Else’s Story, I could go on).

Evil Dead 2013 has almost nothing I actually want from an Evil Dead movie except that it has pretty unimpeachable practical gore effects. All those severed limbs look real good!

I didn’t like Bring Her Back. Thought it mistook a blunt, bludgeoning miserablist approach to grief for emotional depth and complexity and rang false. But Sally Hawkins in that movie? One of the best performances of last year. A testament to her skill that she kept me watching.
