Visited family today & learned that in their town (where I grew up), a couple of storks tried to build a nest on the very tall statue of Mary that sits atop a column in the central market place. This went a little too far for this deeply Catholic town, so they coaxed the storks onto a rooftop nearby

On top of the roof's ridge (no idea if that's the right term - the long top edge of the roof) sits a metal bar carrying a stork's nest. You can sort of see that a stork is sitting in it, but the zoom on my phone is, well, a phone zoom, so you'll have to trust me that the black and white splotch in the nest really is a stork.

So we skipped the parade today bc of heat which means I got to try out my new saw! It is very nice it saws wood so well 🎉🪚 I cut the parts for a shelf I've been wanting to build for about 2 years and it was not a four week effort of laboriously trying to saw straight with a handsaw! Very pleased ☺️

Took the nephew to visit a circus animals retirement home today (animals too old to perform, not mistreated ones) & learned abt how to train tigers (if they're scared of you they will eat you so make sure they're not). Met Kashmir the 17-yo tiger who only came to work today for the reward treats 😂

#petDeath Rassilon passed away today. He stopped eating and had a sharp decline, as cats do. He spent today dozing in the garden until it was time. He'll always be the best cat I've ever met, I will miss him so fucking much, and I'm very grateful that he made it very clear when it was time to go.

When I'm on the couch with a blanket, Rumble will sleep in the blanket hammock between my ankles. Right on the edge of the couch. More than once, I've had to do some quick leg maneuvering to keep him from sliding off and falling. That's definitely not what happened right before this pic was taken.

Snow pics!

Photographer has stepped out into the path from the previous pic. Hedge running on their left straight down the path towards a bright street lamp and passing it to continue into the distance. Near the street lamp, a large tree looms behind the hedge, branches covered in snow. There's the dark shape of a coniferous tree even further that way. On the right side of the path there's row houses. The sky has a slightly purple tinge.

Lense is closer to the hedge now, about two-thirds up and angled slightly upwards. We're further down the path; the street lamp isn't visible anymore. A pine that wasn't visible in the previous pic seems to sit almost on top of the hedge about six meters down the path from the photographer, snow-laden branches drooping. The end of the path is visible now: it ends in a bright patch of light suggesting another street lamp.

To balance out the griping, here's a photo I took of a radio station ad that amused me

A row of 4 gas nozzles, if that's what they're called. They have "Rock Antenne" branded ads on the back. One says "Hier lebt Rock!" (Rock lives here/Rock is alive here), which is the station's slogan. The next one says "Enter Tankman" ("tanken" means to get gas), then "Pour Some Super in Me" (on the Super nozzle, obv.) and "We Will Fuel You" on the last one.

I'm a terrible plant parent, so always pleased to discover plants that reward terrible plant parenting. Like amaryllis, apparently! Behold the amaryllis that was watered once over xmas 2024 but flowered twice, then got entirely ignored over the summer, then watered twice over the last couple weeks.

But lying would indicate an understanding of what is desired, what is possible, and how best to get there. A more plausible explanation is that words have no meaning for this President beyond the immediate moment, and so he believes that his mere utterance of the phrases makes them real. It is a terrifying possibility.

Bought this ages ago, finally managed to frame it. It's from a 1957 edition of The Motion Picture Herald. They just don't make movie ads like they used to 🥺

Old-timey newspaper ad, black and white with red, for a movie called "The Incredible Shrinking Man".

Most of the ad is taken up by negative space. Across the bottom, there's a burning match, its red flame (topped with a dangerous cloud of black smoke) filling the right half and reaching to the top. The movie title and credits are shown underneath. Where your fingers would be if you were holding the match, there he is: the incredible shrinking man, the matchstick the size of a log to him, running towards the reader with a startled expression. He's wearing a sleeveless shirt and no shoes, for some reason.

Across the top of the ad, there's diagonal script breaking up the red match flame declaring that "Every hour he gets smaller... smaller... smaller! Every moment the suspense mounts!" And finally, in the top left of the ad, there's a label informing the reader that this is "one of a series of ads for an unusual and very different motion picture".

On the off-chance anyone sees this who has any of the other ads from this series, maybe in a stack of ancient magazines in a dusty attic, DM me. Please really do. There are few things that please me more than weird-ass old timey movie ads.

Every year, we try to make it to the open air old-timey mountain village museum that puts on a Christmas Market on first advent. So that's what we did today! It was very picturesque, with just enough snow on the ground to cover the grass, and local artists selling their stuff. Also alphorns!

Nightly outdoors scene. Three alphorn players are playing their instruments in front of what seems to be a historical farmhouse: a white wall with three lit windows, a low roof skirted with dark wooden panels, which are decorated with a Christmas lights garland. There's a wooden door standing open, allowing light to shine out to illuminate the muddy, gravelly ground. Left and right to the players people are sitting on a low stack of firewood piled up against the house. To the right of the picture, the shoulder of someone watching the players from the same angle as the camera is visible. The mouths of the three alphorns are lined up neatly, the underside of the bend sitting on the ground, and the horns leading up in a straight incline to the players' mouths. The players are holding their instruments at the very top. The leftmost player has sheet music clipped to the top of his horn, which is obscuring his face.

Aww what a good kitty! There should be a website where you can list hotels and restaurants with cats. We were at a family event on Sunday and this girl spent the entire afternoon snoozing on the bench in the corner; it was delightful 🥺

Rassilon the 20 year old geriatric pants thief curled up in a pair of heavy-cotton cargo pants lying crumpled on a tiled bathroom floor. He's a floofy orange cat and in this pic looks a bit tense despite his curled-up sleeping position, most likely because I was snapping pictures and he suspected I might take his pants-nest away. Avid followers may remember that the bathroom floor is heated, so he'll relax before long.

This fall has been a picture-book fall over here: great fall colors, crisp, sunny fall days, and lately there's been lots of creepy fog. Tried to capture some as I was taking the bin out and accidentally snapped a picture of what appears to be a ghostly tree horror stalking me from the bushes 😨

The tree outside my window is doing an absolutely fantastic job with its fall colors.
