A little over halfway through this monster and adoring its scale (grand, apocalyptic) and scope (romantic, petty, parental). I think Hickman falls into the trap of cultures as symbols - specifically with the Endless Nation and House of Mao - but the interpersonal stuff is so goddamned good.

Rewatched Pee Wee’s Big Adventure for the first time in 25 years or more. What and odd hit. A truly strange, not at all programmatic comedy that’s full-blown kitsch while never selling out Pee Wee.
I would honestly respect this more if he took the money and ran. Like, loot that VC money, buddy.

You know what's a good gotdang movie? Matthau was a star during this period but at 50-ish to May's 39, he's a little miscast (I bet Charles Grodin would've killed in this). Still, Matthau's lovely. Did I get a little teary when Henrietta gifts Henry the frond token? You're damned right I did.

All winners this week, movie-wise. Dark City was the director’s cut from Arrow’s recent 4K. I had to chew on OBAA in a second viewing which hooked me. And Perdita Durango/aka Dance With the Devil is a first time watch since its VHS release.
