My annual lookup of the world democracy indices. The world overall made slight gains towards democracy, and this image shows the stark contrast between my countries of Canada and the US.

Canada is ranked 9th on the index, is a Full democracy, and rose .4 points (out of 10) to 9.08, the 3rd largest national gain from 2024 to 2025.
The United States is ranked 34th, continues as a Flawed democracy, and dropped .2 points to 7.65, the USA's largest drop since the Index was created in 2006.

The images coming out of Iran are already unbearable. Reports of an elementary school struck by missiles, killing dozens of people, with scores more killed around the country. Fear and chaos in the streets as families run through smoke and search for safety.

The United States and Israel have launched an illegal act of war while Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu speak openly of regime change. This is what Prime Minister Mark Carney says he supports. He has issued a statement so brazenly belligerent that even Conservatives like Jason Kenney are cheering it on.

It's a shameful moment that buries all of Carney's high-minded rhetoric in Davos under the rubble.

These leaders justify this war as serving Iranian liberation. But the courageous movement in Iran that has been fighting tyranny for nearly five decades — and is still reeling from the worst massacre in the country's modern history in January — will suffer a massive setback from these foreign bombs. The signal, originally designed to help women in domestic violence signal for help without their abuser observing, is performed by holding one hand up with the thumb tucked into the palm, then folding the four other fingers down, symbolically trapping the thumb by the rest of the fingers. It was designed intentionally as a single continuous hand movement, rather than a sign held in one position, so it could be made easily visible.

Excellent chart. Also note another from the same report. Note that Canada, for comparison, has mor a few decades rated in the high 80s.

Overlapping line charts showing expert, the public's, Democrat, and Republican rationg is US democracy over time, from 2017 to the present, and forecasting current trends to 2027.
The expert opinion has the highest ratings, close to 80 points (same scale as violin chart being reposted) until 2025, where it drops to 50 pts. Same with the public rating, which was in the mid-50s til 2025, slipping to 50 pts since. Democrat ratings rose from mid-50s to over 60 pts from 2021-25, then slipped to low 40s since. Republican ratings went from close to or over 60 pts before 2021, slipped to lower 50s 2021-25, then up to 60 pts.
