Proper detailed attack plans with others in Signal chat
According to a sworn affidavit, Proper's mother told the FBI that Proper had been interacting with a group of people online who "claimed to be ex-military and Christian-based." She said they expressed "ultra-religious and antigovernment sentiments, specifically citing grievances about government corruption, the handling of the Epstein files, data centers taking up all the water in communities and other government actions," court records said.
Proper leaned heavily into his faith in recent months, court records said, and Proper's mother believed the group was manipulating her son.
Additional questioning revealed Proper had been researching and mapping locations in areas northwest of Washington and had received images and maps from people in text messages and messages on the app Discord.
"When she asked Proper what he was doing, he said he couldn't tell her exactly what he was doing, but that they were looking at multiple different locations and intended to conduct 'recon' as well as 'hit and run missions," court records said.
Proper's family also expressed concerns about comments he had made in recent months, including "sympathetic comments about Adolf Hitler and posting anti-Semitic comments on Facebook."
Police searched Proper's iPhone, where communications on Signal groups detailed plans to conduct an attack in Washington with others.

Ms. Fifield, who is affiliated with Independent Women, a conservative group, insisted that her political beliefs had nothing to do with her choice to come forward. She worked brietly on Nikki Haley's 2024 presidential campaign and before that for the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. Ms. Fifield said she had not been paid by any campaign or political entity since Ms. Haley's campaign.
Mr. Platner's campaign said in a statement,
"Let's be very clear: This is a lifelong G.O.P. operative who's dedicated her career to electing Republicans."
Ms. Fifield said she had no connection to the campaign of Senator Susan Collins, Mr.
Platner's likely Republican opponent. She acknowledged that Independent Women had been supportive of Ms. Collins but said she had not been active with the organization recently.

By 2021, he wrote, he no longer believed in "any of the patriotic nonsense" that made him want to enlist, and had become "a firm believer that the best thing a person can do is help their neighbors and live a loving life."
"I'm a vegetable growing, psychedelics taking socialist these days," he wrote. "Still got the guns though, I don't trust the fascists to act politely." He has since said he abhors political violence.

In the absence of the Flores settlement agreement, detention conditions for children in federal immigration custody would surely deteriorate further. The Department of Homeland Security and this administration cannot be trusted to ensure that anyone - including children — is treated with the basic human dignity that law and morality require. Even with the settlement agreement in place, the first Trump administration insisted in 2019 before a federal appeals court that it was "safe and sanitary" to detain immigrant children for days in facilities without soap or toothbrushes and to make them sleep on concrete floors under bright lights without blankets in cold temperatures.
Indeed, the most likely result of the end of Flores would be the indefinite detention of children in dangerous, unlicensed facilities for months or years, until they are deported from the United States.
Detaining immigrant children is unjust, and it is unnecessary to ensure their compliance with immigration proceedings. Under previous administrations, immigrant children have participated in highly successful Alternatives to Detention programs, such as the Family Case Management Program, which provides support to immigrants navigating the immigration court

One family that had been living in the United States for a decade was detained at Dilley; their children had just completed elementary school. One of my clients, the 6-year-old Maria Paola, a first grader living in New York City, showed up at her ICE check-in in her school uniform.
