Books, nature’s last ups From the sprawl 🤔 “Natural history is not only interesting to the individual, it ought to become a national concern, since it is a national good.” CW Peale
Looking up the North River from the Norwell, MA, side, as the blue river winds through the bright green marshes, heading further inland Bad news is the dead branch at center is coming from the American beech at right; you can see the effects of Beech leaf disease on what’s left of its leaves 😞
The name “Shrubby St Johns wort” might put people off bec wth is “shrubby” and St. Johns wort is ofc known fr the non-North-American plants’ medicinal use? But please try it, it’s a tough, go-to plant that does this bee-palooza thing once a year! doesn’t spread or run wild once established either.
“Shrubby” St. Johns Wort pre-bloom. This might be 2 plants side by side, i can’t recall. This plant needs a much better name lol, maybe that would help in people planting more of it!
Cormorants this spring: “We’re in your tidal rivers, waiting for your herring to run the gauntlet” They were also flying up and down the river to the run in good-sized flocks (for around here lol) for a while there 🐟🐟🐟
Lowbush blueberry in Hingham, MA, with berries coming along 🙂
Nice patch of baby sassafras, be-mittened as they are Which means i can tell which tree it is 😜
oh good, a route on this 12-hour walk in near-90 temps that avoids stairs 🤔
❤️Those red laser eyes! Grebe has apparently not slept since the egg (what with the relationships and the parenting)
Normal-sized cape house with a car-suv house attached, plenty of space for growing vehicles here
house made up of a big house in the middle with normal-sized houses on either side, maybe another house or a huge garage out back? in the early 1930s people in the US recognized the economic crisis in which large numbers of individuals and families were unhoused, unroofed
Starflower! Random find in Norwell, ma Love these little flower guys Virginia creeper creeping in the back
I thought the groundnut i had in a pot last year wasn’t coming back until these little green hands starting coming out of the soil like the end of a movie lol
View from World’s End park in Hingham, Massachusetts, toward Hull and Mass Bay beyond
Welp they’re calling it 🤷♀️ All Hoopers, Quints, and Brodys please know you are on standby
Million examples of huh? bike lanes placement in Boston, but i noticed these 2 baffling parking rectangles across fr the entrance to Angell in JP; maybe better than the bus or bike? 🤷♀️ lane section on the other side tho
”I don’t know what a lobster is, how about a red Mandevilleean refugee from Cats who’s rly feeling themselves?” “Perfect!”
Eastern prickly pear is calling this, spring is arriving! ❤️
Roots of a downed tree are now the crown; Moose Hill in Sharon, MA today
Getting a feeling the herring could be running, just some super-subtle herring-gull-sized signs at this local run this plus the regular chirping of osprey and the sight of one osprey taking theirs to go 🤷♀️
Little river coming around a bend into more marshland in eastern MA ❤️ The boggy, brackenish, sulfur-stinking places of home 🙂
Sun and clouds this afternoon, chilly spring day, trees still haven’t leafed out ❤️
