Experience Trio A, the landmark dance by one of the world's most influential choreographers, Yvonne Rainer.
First performed in 1966, Trio A challenged traditional ideas of modern dance.
At the time, conventional dance was led by the plot, characters or musical score but Rainer wanted to instead focus on the body's energy. The dance features a steady sequence of movements, such as toe-tapping and rolling
Rainer choreographed the dancers to avoid eye contact with the audience, so they became more 'object-like, but not objectified. The dancers do not try to match their movements with one another - each dancer finds their pace based on their own bodies.
Rainer developed this dance after she co-founded the Judson Dance Theater
- a collective of choreographers, filmmakers and artists - in the flourishing avant-garde art scene of early 1960s New York. The group was inspired by the minimalist ideas of North American choreographer Merce Cunningham and composer John Cage, who centred chance and repetition in their work.
Redefining dance for a new generation of artists, Rainer's radical methods are now standard features of contemporary dance today.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Trio A, Tate Modern is hosting free performances and screening the 1978 film of Rainer dancing Trio A in the Tanks Lobby, Blavatnik Building, Level O.

Invincible on Prime is cracking. Great TV. Never felt scared for superheroes before. It’s like an 80s sci-fi adventure cartoon but with Superman villains that tear the good guys to pieces.
