Anyway today's read is the revised edition of Transgender History by @susanstryker.bsky.social. I've read 2ed at least five times, and I got through two chapters at the library earlier. Not much I haven't already said about this book. Pineco seems like a good fit, couldn't explain to you why.

Zuri laid back and stretched for a moment before gripping the bar. Intense, guttural drums and guitars played in her earpieces, keeping her blood pumping. She added more weight. She hit another set. On her last, she yelled at the top of her lungs for enough guts to grant her one additional count. Those tattooed, heavy arms fell down to her sides. I have to pull double duty.

Changing the font and typeface to keep the prose in third person limited, rather than using free indirect discourse, is an interesting stylistic choice. Not sure how I feel about it yet.

A bump of her brows and a tilted chin as Bho flicked a glance between what she had written and Tyson’s face. Oh no. I've got a cold 🤧 so we're doing some low-key comics reading from @planetx.bsky.social! My exposure to comics is pretty limited. Mostly I would read my dad's old comics from the 70s and 80s (he was a DC fan). Legion of Super-Heroes is probably my fave, loved those when I was like ten.

"Dark things in East Asia" Girl what. I'm not getting paid enough to deal with this novella's relationship to race smh. Using slavery for cheap shock value with no depth or payoff.

He proffered it to me, and I nodded in thanks. Nevermind his swearing, I felt the situation called for a little mild cursing.

“Right before I heard you calling for me, Alexie, I thought I saw bodies in a tree outside the house. Then I heard knocking… from inside the walls.” “Your-you’re joking. I made that up. The original owners didn’t actually kill and hide their slaves in the walls… did they?” My hands shook, so I tried to distract them with more jerky. I was just trying to sell the place to the bank. Did I manifest some horrid thing? Did that make me a horrible person? I shook my head. Telling a story and committing an atrocity were different ballparks. I couldn’t do that, who in God’s grace could? Spinning a tale about such evil… well. God gave us free will, and that included the dark parts of one’s imagination. They’re called intrusive thoughts for a reason.

Mmm blood flavored whiskey, delicious. I gotta say, it's going for Southern Gothic but it's giving more Hallmark. Back in high school my family was really into Good Witch, this is reminding me of that lmao.

Thick, sweet, and coppery with the same tart cherry and chocolate notes. I glared accusingly at the liquid gold, then at the room. Was there something different about the corner where I had aged it? Each barrel had its own corner so I could experiment. This one was closest to the brick wall and stairs to the kitchen above. Ventilation? Or perhaps an unseen mold on the brick, or rusty nails. A thought coiled in my mind. “It tastes like blood.” Another sip, and the thought tightened around my fears. It was slight, the taste, faint as a fleeting memory. Yet, it remained present. I licked my lips as I imagined a dead body in the barrel. One of the dead residents taking up a home in my whiskey.

Who am I to judge? After all, being a trans woman in a small southern town would be a death sentence in most other places. It helped that the pastor was my stepfather; he took me in when my parents died in a terrible accident. They only ever found an arm and some blood. Out of the four hundred or so people in our town, only a handful brought their concerns to Pastor John about my transition. Claiming I was acting out, they said it was the Devil’s work. Pastor John had some words for those people. “Does God not know us? Did He not breathe life into our very being? If He has a plan and knows who ‘we’ are before conception, molded us, then who are we to say this is wrong? I ask you, how does Alex—now Alexie—truly harm your life? Listen not to the snakes, but to your heart and God. Alexie is part of our community; she works the corn like all of you and provides your hooch. So, I would ask all those with sin and hate in their hearts to pray and let go.”
