Martin Grimshaw Has Long Covid
@thrivingplanet
Was: Facilitation & organisational culture nerd for do-gooders; climate & sustainability. Healthy, athletic; MTB, ski, mountaineering, outdoors. Everything on pause: Long Covid is brutal. A lot funnier IRL Lancaster, North West England (Plague Island) ⓥ🇨🇭
For anyone interested in the paper that included the image of people's capillaries after Covid above, it's been located. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC... With thanks to @drannemurphy.bsky.social @lizziec.bsky.social #LongCovid
This purple bridleway sign is I think new to me, you can take a horse + cart up & down this one apparently. It's the Walna Scar 'Road', and if you know this classic mountain pass in the Lake District, Cumbria it's hard to imagine, presumably it would be treacherous and terrifying.
These images show the capillaries of 4 people. 1st is a healthy control (no Covid), the 2nd someone 'recovered' from Covid, the last two patients with Long Covid. Thousands of examples like this. Possibly everyone is on a spectrum of post-Covid damage from asymptomatic to symptomatic Long Covid.
Ah I just came across the graphic on presenteeism vs absentism, and it is roughly 6 times greater days lost due to working through illness. Presumably it can be used as rule of thumb for school absences too. It's harmful to the individual - especially if or after Covid - and also to everyone else.
Great Mullein: roughly 50cm tall with wide, soft leaves, unfurling like a velvet flower. ...And pretty rocks, south Cumbria, NW England
'Definitely not Covid'. Reporting on new research of an alarming drop in healthy life expectancy in the UK has emphasised 'everything but Covid'. Yes 14 years of Tory austerity, widening inequality, kneecapping the NHS, the 'Economic Murder' of 330,000. Yes Brexit... 🧵1/3 #LongCovid #MedSky
Also the majority of people missing the point - whoosh! - and talking about the first 4, riding motor bikes etc. They're good basic risk / safety advice, but only to set up for the punchline - Covid causes brain damage and damage is cumulative with repeat infections.
Ok looks like I'm over the technical glitch, here's the screenshot I took from the article with #AltText that failed to load properly above.
TL;DR - Post war Keynesian economics worked, its 'failure' was a myth, and the market capitalism that followed as championed by Thatcher & Reagan has been a complete failure by comparison. bsky.app/profile/mrma...

Important thread by @1goodtern.bsky.social at the bad place: We're missing the combined effect of endothelial & epithelial damage from our understanding of Covid & #LongCovid Damage to membranes, linings, barriers and walls throughout the body, and cumulative. threadreaderapp.com/thread/20074...

This gives a good sense of the scale of ice loss. An image of the new Montenvers, Chamonix cable car down to what's left of the Mer De Glace. Everything below used to be glacial ice. [Alamy stock photo by Simona Abbondio]
To compare to the article photo, this early C20th postcard shows Montenvers train station was just above the glacier. Access ladders down got longer and longer as the distance to the ice increased. In 2024 a new cable car was opened from the valley floor up to the station. bsky.app/profile/jhau...
Flash back to a ski descent of the Valle Blanche, Mer De Glace / Glacier Du Tacul glacier, Mt Blanc. The huge volume of ice already lost and rock collapse in this area is mind bending and terrifying. I didn't fly there because I gave up flying for #ClimateChange 20 years ago. #FlightFree
From the article, this is a really damning graphic. A total failure of Public Health and mishandling of the pandemic.
Cumbrian Alps in full winter splendour a few days back. I actually got a little sunburn, believe it or not. Grisedale Pike circular, Lake District.
Ghosts of Halloween, their haunted screams begging to be released from this horror. 21st November, Cumbria.
Oh God, I've already failed at #Whamaggedon and it's still only November. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whamage...
Flashback to a stroll through the upper slopes of Mt Blanc, in the Alps. Me & my Dad climbed it for his 70th birthday. Bit of a mountain adventure. Glaciers and seracs blow my mind every time. #Mountaineering #Nature
This was me before #LongCovid. I appreciate what I've lived, but I've lost so much. bsky.app/profile/kinl...
I was surprised to find a load of stunning, colourful mushrooms in Surrey Hills #woodland in the middle of the August heatwave. #FallenTrunkFriday ?? #FungiFriends #FungiFriday #Ecology
