After his disfigurement, Mason becomes a recluse, rarely leaving Muskrat Farm, his country estate. He nevertheless indulges in whatever paraphilias his disability allows, such as getting sexual gratification from making children cry. Verger's only sources of human contact are his assistant, Cordell—a fellow sex offender—and Margot, who works for Mason as a bodyguard. Margot despises her brother, but stays in his employ to persuade him to donate his sperm to her partner, Judy Ingram, so they can conceive a child.

A combination of factors helped South Dakota climb near the top of the list. More than 6% of South Dakota's workers have multiple jobs, the 11th-highest percentage in the country. The state also has the fifth-lowest share of idle youth, or 18- to 24-year-olds who are not in school, are not working and have no school experience beyond a high school diploma.

“South Dakota’s robust economy is driving steady revenue growth, moving our budget in an even stronger direction,” Gov. Larry Rhoden said in a news release. “We keep our taxes very low and ensure we have the highest return on each dollar invested. We’re setting an example for the nation of good stewardship of taxpayer dollars by doing things the right way, the South Dakota way.”

Sales tax revenue growth accounted for $17 million of the surplus. Fiscal year 2026 sales tax grew 6.6% compared to the 2025 fiscal year of 4.7%.
