Right, my mistake. That answer is fine but I think it's missing an opportunity. Because I disagree with you about what the average American understands about 9/11. Here's a Pew poll from 2004. A majority of Democrats and 45% of independents *already* understood American foreign policy's role.

Pew poll from 2004: "Might U.S Wrongdoing Have Motivated 9/11 Attacks?" 38% said yes in 2004, 33% in 2001. In 2004 that 38% was made of 51% of Democrats and 45% of independents, plus 17% of Republicans.

Folks like this, I don’t understand. Piker wasn’t a Platner defender. If anything, he spent significant time defending his critics and accusers from skeptics. Do we just need someone to stab at? Is that how we’re defending our values?

The @nytimes.com response to the SCOTUS rulings of 6/30/26 -- they are ostensibly talking about the birthright citizenship case, and it would have been appropriate if not for what this framing also says about the day's other rulings -- allowing states to ban trans athletes and unleashing a new flood of money in politics via abolishing party contribution limits -- as well as many prior rulings of this chronically unprincipled court, all disastrous as well as legally ridiculous. You do not have to hand it to these Christian nationalist fascist lowlifes, ever

I don't know for sure when the site changed. But I do know that between these two times, Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros pulled ahead of longtime Rep. Diana DeGette. Did the answer to the Times' question become distasteful for its editorial staff? Does the Times owe voters more than open hostility?

Melat Kiros up 4 points and almost 5,000 votes on Rep. Diana DeGette with 73% of the vote counted.

At 9pm, the @nytimes.com asked of today's CO primaries, "Will Left-Wing Energy Keep Rising?" By 11, the front page's only mention of the CO primaries could be found more than 3000 pixels from the top, sans familiar "2026" graphic, without mention of the night's marquee left-vs-liberal contest.

Per the Internet Archive, at 9pm EST, @nytimes.com showed its usual 2026 Election Coverage, clearly teeing up this race as a referendum on the left's ascendance.

By 11pm, after the democratic socialist Melat Kiros pulled ahead of the longtime incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette, the only mention of the 2026 elections on the front page of the New York Times was an unlabeled box some 3000 pixels from the top.

We think that is the only way you beat whoever comes after Trump. And parties are ultimately defined and reoriented around their presidential nominees and their presidents.

NYTimes: Can you preview for our readers what that could look like?

Cowan: What it means, ultimately, is influencing all of the people who will run for president who are anywhere from the kind of mushy to more moderate. Not the lefties, but everybody else.

Influencing them, and all the concentric circles around them. Not just their teams and their operatives, but all the key people in the early primary and presidential battleground states. People in media, on social media, etc. Creating a highly persuasive case that we market very widely throughout the Democratic Party, not just in Washington but around the country, so that people believe there is one way to win in ’28, and that is by nominating somebody who can win over that middle, and rejecting anybody from the far left.

What that will involve is a large amount of public opinion research that makes our case, extensive convenings like this, a lot of work behind the scenes with all of the campaigns and their circles.

We have built out a very extensive database that tracks everybody who might run for president who’s remotely in this space — none of the far-lefters, but everybody else — and all the circles around them. Their staff, their advisers, their funders, the key people who they know in their friends-and-family networks. We probably have the only database like that, of anybody in Democratic politics.

CNN polling is both reassuring (60% against, so no real rally round the flag effect, very little wagging re: the dog) and appalling (40% of people don’t understand that this is happening completely without a plan or strategy or win condition). Imagine being so deluded about our situation. Yikes.

Info from CNN: “The poll, fielded shortly after US and Israeli attacks launched the war with Iran, finds majorities express doubts about President Donald Trump's handling of the situation. Most say they lack trust in Trump to make the right decisions about US use of force in Iran, with 60% saying they do not think he has a clear plan for handling the situation and 62% saying he should get congressional approval for any further military action.
Just over a quarter (27%) feel that the US made enough of an effort at diplomacy with Iran before using military force, with 39% saying the US did not try hard enough at diplomacy first and 33% unsure.

Then we've got "dur, cut spending" bozos like these, most of whom seem to hail from very non-NYC places. I would simply make line go down! WHY DOESN'T ANYONE THINK ABOUT THIS BRILLIANT IDEA?

Drew from SAN DIEGO thinks there's $800 MILLION DOLLARS of "wasteful spending or fraud", but I don't think NYC is currently funding any vital clinical studies or saving kids from AIDS anywhere, so he might have to go DOGE himself: "Why no proposal to cut wasteful spending or fraud? I doubt it’s Tweed level corruption, but I’m sure there’s enough out there to pay for the free buses."

Brody from NYC asks a question he should have Googled: "How about cutting the budget instead of continuously increasing it? Is that against the law or something?"

Alex K from NJ wants to know if anyone has ever counted up the revenue and expenses of the city. HAS ANYONE EVER ASKED WHERE ALL THE MONEY IS GOING? "Democratic voters in urban districts are stuck in this loop of false belief that when government is not working efficiently, just raise taxes to get more money and somehow, possibly, maybe, the government will become more efficient.

Does anyone stop to think exactly how much revenue is being pulled in by City Hall? They billions upon billions of dollars that falls into its treasury every year?

Has anyone taken the next step and asked where all that money is going? Is it being spent efficiently, or is it used for obscenely high salaries, political favors, no-show jobs, useless services and agencies? Why is the answer simply always to raise taxes, instead of working toward a more efficient government. Pull out the books and find a much more difficult, but fair way to reduce cost in that obscenely expensive city."

William Colgan from Rensselaer is really baffled about why we would need to raise taxes on the ultra rich. And by his logic, he's right. Why would we need to spend anything on anything? Why can politicians not provide good government for free? "So if the gap is $5 billion out of current spending of $124 billion, then just cut 5% from current spending, and viola no new taxes. Why is it impossible to do that? To fund free buses, a good idea by the way, cut spending elsewhere. Why can politicians not do that?"

This guy from Toronto hallucinates, "Mamdani is following a familiar playbook for extremists: a) lie to get votes; b) pretend complex problems are simple; c) falsely demonize a small group your supporters can hate; d) blame others and ignore your own failures. And when he fails as mayor of New York city, he will use the same playbook on the state or federal level. Take a look at Erdogan's rise to seize control in Turkey, as another example."

Where am I supposed to be getting all this extra income from, Zohran? Unlike you, my income has not risen, and my housing and health care isn’t subsidized by the government.

i can’t afford to pay more so you can give other people free things like free busses, free child care, and lower cost for their subsidized housing (already lower than any other rent in the city) while I pay for the subway fare hikes, higher health care, and now higher property taxes on my home - my only security.

There's a clip of Alex Pretti being assaulted by ICE after expressing anger (from days prior to his murder) that somebody gave to the Daily Mail, and it's an important reminder that filming police at protests can be used against us if we are not judicious about what we share and with whom.
