And just to see where the naysaying is coming from, here's your handy heat map. Compare with fossil fuel production.
Climate solutions won't work Need fossil fuels That's what they're saying. Even some Democrats, but mostly mostly Republicans.
Hats off to Travis Coan and Ranadheer Malla who led on this important project. One thing AI is actually useful for is categorizing huge numbers of pieces of text. Here we scraped Congressional speeches to see what's being claimed on climate. Denial << Delay www.nature.com/articles/s44...
Turns out faculty and students (and bold administrators, alumni and parents) can do a lot--document and publicize. Point out the links, and whose interests they are really advancing. These are outsiders, and they are wrecking one of America's most successful sectors. We need to stop them.
How do you control unruly academics? Through their trustees, of course. This right-wing group has a national network to push their agendas on universities across the USA. @aaup.org www.aaup.org/sites/defaul...
This is foundational stuff: (just five pages to understand why we're where we are on climate change) cssn.org/cssn-primer-...
Here it is, so far: events made more severe 8-10x more likely than less severe.
Ran the Boston Marathon yesterday. Friends were at the finish line. Man that thing is tough.
And “Delay of all Act On Climate mandates by at least 20 years so that Ocean Staters will not have to pay massive price increases” Irony the group called for stopping construction of nearly done wind farms which will actually lower rates.
Here’s an auto-email generator to government leaders from our local SPN think tank. Note the fear-mongering and the awful, dumb, maybe racist AI image. Who is looking into manufactured opposition to state climate efforts?
The attack on our state-level climate policies is organized and funded by fossil fuel interests. They have been waiting for this moment for years. They are pouncing. Exhibit A: benign-looking report. Look closely at the logos—5 SPN groups and Americans for Progress. Koch-funded
"For every one speech that included a contrarian claim from a Democrat, there were roughly 13 speeches that included a claim from Republicans. ..and those representing constituencies with higher fossil fuel employment or receiving more fossil fuel campaign contributions."
"We find that contrarian claims spike during major climate policy moments (1997, 2008-9, and 2015), with “solutions increase costs” comprising roughly one-third of all contrarian claims made."
I'm turning 65 in two weeks. I'm OK with that, but I have no idea where the time went. What chagrins me, is that I'm graduating into THE ONLY DEMOGRAPHIC that approves of Trump (white, male, >65). Weird study, w/ results of interviews over a time period. www.gelliottmorris.com/p/a-very-dde...

This was written for natural scientists, but much applies to social scientists as well.

Wrapping up, "202. Under the APA, the Court “shall . . . hold unlawful and set aside” final agency action that is “not in accordance with law” or “in excess of statutory jurisdiction, authority, or limitations, or short of statutory right.” 5 U.S.C. § 706(2)(A), (C). 203."
"The Stop Work Order also “entirely failed to consider..reliance interests. State Farm, 463 U.S. at 43. When an agency “changes course,” as Interior did here, it must consider whether its prior actions “engendered serious reliance interests” and take those interests into account."

Most def Climate Week in NYC with my foldie Brompton! Had a blast up and down the island going to events at Columbia, the UN, midtown, and stayed way down in Chinatown. Exciting/nuts rides! No parking, driving or waiting for rideshares or transit. Biking to and from the Amtrak was nice too.
