As a forever grieving ass bitch, I preordered @sesmith.lol’s book and I CANNOT WAIT TO READ IT. You should order it, too!
North Carolina friends: Please consider attending this important event this weekend in Raleigh. As we head into summer, farmworkers and other outdoor workers are at incredible risk as temperatures soar. Due to poor labor protections, migrant farmworkers die each summer working in American fields.
This is the kind of hard hitting journalism you get when you gut newsrooms.
This is the bit from ray's reporting that really took me out. The Trump admin's efforts will overturn a Biden-era rule that regulated against easily preventable emissions leakages.
Everything is normal, everything is fine. It’s not like the Trump admin has been bombing civilians purported to be cartel members without evidence, right? RIGHT?
I've never seen doublespeak deployed as regularly, or as transparently, as it is under the Trump administration's DHS.
Tonight I am thinking of Claudia Patricia Gómez González, Alex Pretti, and so many others whose lives were cut short by Border Patrol.
In case you didn't know, @prismreports.org is publishing some extraordinary journalism. This two-part Q&A conducted by Marah Abdel Jaber with Dr. Feroze Sidhwa about his time providing care in Gaza is a must-read. Here's an excerpt from part-one. I'll link both parts in a thread.
These are screenshots from an actual DHS press release that just went out offering "self-deportation" as a "gift" to "illegal aliens" this holiday season. This administration is truly repugnant.
I was looking at protest photos from NC and if this isn’t the shadiest, most southern ass sign… I love you, Durham!
This is a small thing, but I've been thinking about this quote from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools educator Mechelle Vaughn.
Maybe I'm being too critical, but this NYT headline really grates on me. It assumes the reader doesn't know anyone on SNAP, or isn't on SNAP themselves. Which, I think, says a lot about who is writing the news and who the NYT sees as its audience.
Attention fellow Espooky Latinas: You have homework. Say hello to your next book obsession!
No, but seriously. These are screenshots from an actual DHS press release about this.
This is exactly what I meant by this. We know who this is for, and it's certainly not for immigrant families who don't have the option of looking away because their daily lives are impacted by immigration enforcement.
This is a huge part of the problem. H-2A workers have no idea what they are walking into when they are brought to the U.S. by an American employer, but especially a farm labor contractor. Here's a short summary of some of the shit Isabella's FLC has been involved in:
Today ICE killed Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, an immigrant in Chicago who was shot during an enforcement operation. DHS' press release about his death focused on the agency's claim that ICE agents have seen a "1000% increase in assaults against them."
I am unfortunately reading Kristi Norm’s books for a couple of pieces of writing I’m working on and Riley Gaines’ citation is so funny to me.
Having sat through a few legal reviews recently, I think the omission of Trump from the headline here isn’t just WSJ being WSJ. It’s quite strategic, especially given Trump’s recent, successful media lawsuits…
