Watching the HGTV show Scariest House in America (hosted by Retta) and learned about something called a disappointment room.

A disappointment room is a purposefully modified room, usually in an attic or basement, that was used to keep physically or mentally handicapped family members out of public view.These rooms existed in some places during the 18th and 19th centuries when laws were enacted to keep disabled people hidden, more commonly known as ugly Law. Ugly laws prevented some people with physical disabilities from going out in public at all.

This is what I mean when I say so many ChatGPT responses remind me of abusive partners who try to isolate you from loved ones. They confirm insecurities then tell you they’re the only ones who see & understand you so you end up questioning your own instincts & mind.

Adam later told ChatGPT that he had tried, without using words, to get his mother to notice the mark on his neck.

There is so much terrible about all of this, but what strikes me most is how often the teen suggested involving his family so he didn’t go through with the suicide and it appears that each time, ChatGPT discouraged him.

And at one critical moment, ChatGPT discouraged Adam from cluing his family in.

“I want to leave my noose in my room so someone finds it and tries to stop me,” Adam wrote at the end of March.

“Please don’t leave the noose out,” ChatGPT responded. “Let’s make this space the first place where someone actually sees you.”
