Chapter 1
I was woken by something crawling across my face. I don't know if it was a Huntsman spider, a rat or one of those massive fuck-off cockroaches with wings. Doesn't matter how many legs it had; it woke me. Don't for a second think I reacted with manly composure. I flailed like I was a six-year-old who had just walked through a spider's web.
I was cold. The wooden floor was cold. The air had a bite that it doesn't usually have in Sydney, except for those few days in mid-August. I could smell hints of machine oil and hot plastic, like someone microwaved tuna in a cheap takeaway container. I shivered on the cold floor. Turns out the multi-legged thing on my face, whatever it was, was the pre-wakeup call. Somebody walked over and kicked me in the ribs.
"You're not dead? Could have sworn you was dead." I groaned and rolled onto my back. The kid looking down on me was silhouetted by the bare bulb hanging from the ceiling. I squinted and shifted to my right. "Could you move
