Humanist, mensch, husband-to-my-husband, father & friend. Love nature, architecture, travel, world history, books, food, wine & craft beer. So fortunate to live in beautiful Blue Ridge Mtns in cool, quirky Asheville, NC (AVL). Follow mostly ppl in AVL/NC.
This happy, beautiful young woman is my mother when she was just 18 or 19 years old. She passed away a couple months ago & I recently found this picture among her personal belongings. I've seen many other photos of her when she was young, but never this one previously.
This ad appeared in the Midwest edition of a Penny Saver last week. I assume it's a typo. Most people don't want to buy a used prostate because you don't really know how much mileage it has on it, whether the previous owner drove it hard or whether it's been involved in any rear-end collisions.
Okay, let's post some more footpath pics...all hopefully leading to a better future.
What is it about Japanese gardens that make them such tranquil, peaceful spaces? Zen is hard to define exactly, but I know it (and feel it) when I see it!
Just attended adult space academy at the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. Love sci fi & learning about space. Cool experience. As a kid of the Space Age, I'm just disappointed knowing how hard it will be to ever go beyond even our nearest neighboring moon & planet. Maybe some day!
You know you're in North Carolina when even the crabs can play the fiddle.
It's like a sad ripoff of the smoky look popularized by singer Adam Lambert. Frankly, Adam wore it better.
Almost finished with the book. Parsing it out a bit, as I did with favorite cookies as a kid. The image spread across pages 202-3 struck me as so similar to the mountains surrounding Asheville. You clearly have a love for mountains. Hopefully during your visit you got to enjoy our mountains, too!
If they were trying to recreate the team flag of the Seattle Sounders Football Club, they actually did a pretty good job.
1st time growing Zephyr squash ("bi-squashual"?). Harvested & prepared one with dinner last night. Nice texture & taste. Seems like they're going to be fairly productive. I've never had much success with crookneck yellow summer squash but last year's straightneck yellow ones were super productive.

Music on Main in Weaverville just north of Asheville. Goes to 9 tonight.
If you Asheville locals find yourselves down by Home Depot/Fairview Rd & are hungry for something you can't get anywhere else in Asheville, you gotta stop at the Local Buggy Food Truck and get some Pollo a la Brasa (Peruvian rotisserie chicken). It is a thing unto itself! The chiles, spices, sauces!
There will be counter programming from the Right. Tradwife! * Able to bake cookies just like Mom's * Able to pop out kiddos every year * Able to clean up non-stop after her hubby & boys * Able to remain subservient to hubby's every decision, command and wish. Coming to a [home] theater near you!
Sorry, girl, but here in Asheville, we already have a bearded lady, and she's Divine. She can sing, too (not one of those lip syncers). @divineholeburn.bsky.social
I liked him when he played Fat Bastard in the Austin Powers movies. But it's pretty much been downhill for him since then.
Yes, awhile ago. They currently have 815 beds and are going up to mid 900s. The old hospital (tan building) is being razed to build a parking lot for employees (which they need more of -- both parking and employees!).
The Dutch Cove Trail actually has more interesting flora (including mushrooms) & is an alt trail back for 1/3 of the Papertown Express Trail. There are also numerous trails reserved for mountain bikers, ranging from fairly gentle to rugged, steep back country trails.
Looking for an exercise-y nature hike near Asheville? Try Chestnut Mountain Nature Park on the way to Canton. Not the most remarkable forest, but it's a great 6 mile RT hike via Papertown Express Trail to the summit. Well maintained trails. Mostly under tree canopy. Gradual elevation change of 1K ft
Also a shout out to Ninth Street Bakery in Durham. Don't know if they are doing it again this year, but in previous years they've done Pride Bread during June. Tasty bread and celebrates my peeps!
tRump unveils final design for new $1B White House ballroom.
I'll have to admit, I have decidedly mixed feelings about the Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville. It's a unique property, truly a landmark. The views from the main lobby are incredible. But I always feel like this should be a home for either The Flintstones or Hobbits. ♥️ the annual gingerbread contest
Spent a couple hours enjoying downtown Asheville today. Tried another new restaurant, this one describing itself as Vietnamese street food. A dozen variations of pho, along with a couple vermicelli noodle dishes & various roll appetizers. Pho was good, but the chicken vermicelli bowl was fantastic!
Ruh-roh! Looks like Elon Musk bought the rights to Scooby-Doo and reimagined the Mystery Machine as a cybertruck.
