Why I've spent the last few months telling anyone who will listen that Reform are very beatable. There is a winning progressive coalition out there for the taking, even in areas written off by the national media as inherently reactionary. (Holding it is another matter...)
Grew up near enough to Nottingham that I spent many teenage Saturdays hanging around the city centre. Remember seeing their Sillitoe Room once and thinking "cool, they have a room named after Alan Sillitoe" and "wonder if I'll ever get to do a talk there some day". Only 25 short years later, I did!
Talking at York Waterstones tonight and Nottingham tomorrow - come along if you're local. Lots has happened in the two months since the book came out...
Also, two pictures from the Museum of Resistance to the Dictatorship...
In São Paulo this week to meet journalists responding to threats from authoritarians and the far-right the world over. Stepped out to talk to Australian radio about why their own home-grown racist grifter has been visiting her UK counterparts. This stuff is global but so are we.
Thanks @thenerve.news for making If We Tolerate This one of its summer books picks of 2026.
Lots of things that could stand as a political epitaph for Keir Starmer, but for me it's this story from a long read I wrote last year on what happened to the heroic human rights lawyer we used to hear so much about.
Thanks for helping push this up the charts - a modest achievement but we've done this with relatively little mainstream media coverage. That's something we expected, so we came up with a plan to circumvent, which is why all your recommendations, shares, feedback etc matter a huge amount.
So glad that Luqman Saeed - an academic at Ulster University - has written this piece about the Belfast riots. I hope I could write this clearly and perceptively were I under similar pressure right now. www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2026/ju...
Thanks Keith! Look what is literally top of my tbr pile (delayed by book writing)
Dream review here from a Guardian bookshop reader. With this book, more than any I've written before, I was trying to think: "what would readers actually find useful right now?" guardianbookshop.com/if-we-tolera...
Pleasingly eclectic spread of coverage for IF WE TOLERATE THIS coming in, from the New Statesman, Tablet, Financial Times and the Economist so far... and they all like it! uk.bookshop.org/p/books/if-w...
IF WE TOLERATE THIS is out today! These are worrying times politically but if there's one thing I want to get across, it's that the slide into far-right nationalism is not inevitable. Please help me spread the word. uk.bookshop.org/p/books/if-w...
Sara Yasin, former managing ed of the LA Times on working in - and leaving - US legacy media. Sara now edits The Key, a new magazine published by Palestine Festival of Literature, which you can read and subscribe to here... www.thekeymagazine.com/p/western-jo...
Hello, I have a new book out in the spring with Picador and I would love it if you could help me spread the word. IF WE TOLERATE THIS draws on years of work, to help readers understand why British politics is hurtling rightwards and what to do about it. Pre-orders: uk.bookshop.org/p/books/if-w...
For the @equatormag.bsky.social newsletter, I talked about how I reported my piece on the BBC and Gaza, and what's at stake in the current crisis. You can read/sign up below - Equator is a brilliant and necessary new magazine, so give it your support! www.equator.org/articles/ins...
I also haven't been able to get this bizarre quote out of my head. "If you don't like this, you won't like what follows me." I know what she means to say but it's phrased like an admission that they know this will just bring on Reform but they're going to do it anyway. Paging Dr Freud!
V pleased to be giving a public talk (two, in fact) at Ulster University later this month: "How did we get here? The rise of Britain's far right." Derry, 25 Nov: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/how-did-we... Belfast, 25 Nov: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/how-did-we... Please come along, or share with friends.
If you want to know what the UK government's position is on its obligations under the Genocide Convention in relation to its support for Israel, here's what it argued in court this summer.
Had a few conversations recently that make me think, for the first time in ages, there are some exciting things happening in media. This is one of the highlights: Equator, a new magazine set up by Nesrine Malik, Pankaj Mishra, Jonathan Shainin and others. Sign up for info here: www.equator.org
Lovely to receive a copy of the book my friend and occasional ad-hoc photographer @amarichi.bsky.social made with her students at the Academie van Bouwkunst in Amsterdam. More about her work at www.maribastashevski.com.
