I'm in the process of printing out two sets of Star Control miniatures for someone as a commission. Have to finish modeling a few remaining ships, but the fleet is coming together. They wanted the big ships at 3", medium ships at 2", and small ships at 1".
I also went in and modeled a rendition of the Orz Marine from Star Control 2. I wanted to have a model of these available as proxies in case anyone was playing a game with the Orz Nemesis that would require boarding teams / assault shuttles on the table.
Here are two shots of the printed version of the Centauri ship, so you can see how it turned out when it was printed.
Here's an aft view of the ship that shows that I kept the engine configuration from the original fan design, but changed a lot of the other finer details. I also made sure to mount the twin arrays prominently on the hull, and added some ball turrets to the sides similar to the AOG Centauri ships.
I took a top down render of the ship I found and used that as my basic template, so it maintains many of the same basic forms of the original, but then I more or less did my own thing with the other elements of the design, maintly to keep it more consistent with the existing Centauri ships.
It's been awhile since I posted pics of some of the ships I've been working on this last month! Here's a Centauri Advanced Cruiser, based on a top down and art from an existing fan design (whose attribution I can't read, looks like maybe Madkoifish?).
Picture of me from Queer Torrington Pride 2026 🏳️🌈! I told Winter to paint whatever they wanted, and that I trusted them. I ended up with this funny little man holding onto my glasses for dear life. I told them my trust was forever shattered. 😆😭 It was fun and I got to meet some neat people!
There there's this old Centauri freighter, the Virlisi. I started from the B5W silhouette and tried to reverse engineer what I could. I did redo the nose and gave it a nose similar to that on the Centurion (after a recommendation from a patron), and I think this turned out okay.
I also did a quick version of the goofy looking Markab breaching pod that was included in the Babylon 5 Wars game. The silhouette meant it had the wings in those positions, and the big obvious engines. I then designed around those elements the best I could to create the little gaming piece.
I am working on some Markab prints for an old B5W player, and realized my old Mafka Transport cruiser had some issues, so I decided to go ahead and redo it! Here's a look at the remodeled version, along with the a few comparisons between the new and old models.
Meanwhile, I had a request to do a rendition of the Centauri Tavor Siege Cruiser from the Wars of the Centauri Republic B5W supplement. Here's how that ended up. The silhouette made was clearly intended to look like a Primus, so I leaned into that design aesthetic.
I may do a few more fine detail edits to this one, but otherwise the Kishock Drake Heavy Cruiser 3d model is now complete and ready for rendering as part of the cover art for the VBAM Uncharted Territories book.
The marquee on top of the First Interstate Bank tower said 47 F, so you add the wind on to that and it was just a bit too brisk for me. We had 80 F earlier in the week, but today the weather just did not cooperate. Checking FB, I did find a video posted with part of me in it LOL
Went to my first Pride today. Didn’t get any pics while there, but it was so cold and windy I had to bounce after 2 hours. 😭 glad I took a light jacket with me.
Here are some pictures of test prints of the new #VBAM Bintari Federation ships. Need to prime and paint them after they cure so I can double check the fidelity of some of the details and make sure I don't have to make any adjustments before finishing the rest of their fleet.
I then started blocking out the Thantalus Advanced Cruiser. This is basically the Not-Excalibur to the Shantor's Not-White Star. What can I say, younger me was not very creative when he was designing these ships! :P But one this model is done, I should only need two more models to start book art.
Next up is the Bintari Hishoch Warship! I am not super happy with all of the paneling, but I was trying to make it generally fit the silhouette I had for it. I think it still mostly works, although I'll have to see how it renders and prints.
This is the original line art I dfid for it back in like 1999 or something. It's very obviously supposed to be a White Star ripoff, but I decided to go with a slightly more utilitarian design this time around.
Working on some artwork for the next #VBAM book. This time it's a redraw and new take on the Bintari Shantor Scout!
And for a future project, I ended up sitting down to start modeling on a simple version of the Precursor Flagship from The Ur-Quan Masters. The idea is to model each of the modules so they can be printed and mounted separately, allowing for full customization. We'll see how that ends up working!
Finally, I went in and did the Nike battlecruiser from the B5 EFNI site. This ship has been in my requests folder for a long time, and I figured I needed something that was likely to be of more interesting to my patrons for this month's release. So here it is!
Then I had to figure out what to do with the Starfox and Flying Fox. The Starfox is a medium version of the Flying Fox, and the Flying Fox is something of a variant of the Aries. I opted to be lazy and just modify the Aries to vaguely look like the Flying Fox - but visually distinct enough for play.
In the interests of finishing up in-progress factions, I did the Belt Alliance Heavy Gunboat. I tried to reuse assets from the Medium Gunboat where possible, to provide continuity between the two different ship classes.
Since I had almost all of the Grome ships done, I decided to just go ahead and model their starbase and get it done, too. I didn't go crazy on the connection struts, opting to make them a bit bulkier so the base has a better chance of holding up after it's printed.
The next half finished model I actually completed was the Grome Trokan Flagship, also from Babylon 5 Wars. I had this ship mostly done before, but it was waiting for detailing and some final gun placements. Not super happy with it, but it is fairly close to the original silhouette.
Another half completed model that I saw through to completion was the Deneth Watchtower starbase. This is from the Babylon 5 Wars game, and I worked from the top down view of the base to try and figure out what it should look like given its armament and shape.
I then went in and updated another older design to create the Nassar class, which joins the Islamic navy fleet for my Solar War setting. It fit in well enough for the existing Sunnah that I figured I might as well style it in a similar fashion.
I then went back and did a similar process with my old Aberdeen escort carrier to give it some more panel definition and rework the design to make it more detailed. The original version of this was inspired by the Victory from WC3.
With those Cairo parts, I then kitbashed a lighter warship and a heavier dreadnought for giggles. Not great ships, but it was an interesting thought exercise.
