Answer: More so the latter, I guess? Usually each of AJ's different forms are different universes/timelines.

Feraligatr AJ is from some Pokémon universe.

Hisuian Decidueye AJ is from some other Pokémon universe.

Ceruledge AJ is from some other OTHER Pokémon universe.

Hisuian Braviary Rito AJ is actually NOT from a Pokémon universe, but rather the Zelda Breath of the Wild universe.

Zangoose AJ... Well, you get the idea. I hope this is making sense.

Heck, one form can have multiple timelines and origin stories. For example, Platypus AJ can be a kind of Shonen hero adventurer, he can be a human-turned-werecreature, or maybe he's just been an anthro platypus all this time.

Lizard AJ can be just a lizard guy, or he's a Curt Connors variant from the Marvel multiverse.

Dragon-slash-drake AJ can be... well, just a dragon, or a more human-proportioned anthro dragon, or he can be a wére dragon knight.
