In Hillsdale, we’re told the Hillsdale College crowd are the “serious” adults in the room—the PhDs, the media professionals, the people who should know the rules better than anyone. So let’s talk about Bill Zeiser, Executive Director of Social Media at Hillsdale College and advisor to the Hillsdale Collegian, and what he just did in Ward 3.
On the nominating petition for John C. East for Ward 3 council, you can clearly see the signature and printed name “William G. Zeiser.”
On the nominating petition for Matthew Kniffin for that same Ward 3 council seat, you can clearly see the signature and printed name “WILLIAM G. ZEISER” again.
Two different candidates.
Same office.
Same ward.
Same election cycle.
Same Hillsdale College staffer signing both sheets.
Now look one line over: Bill’s wife appears on only one of the petitions—not both. She followed the law every voter in Michigan is given: you pick one candidate per office when you sign nominating petitions. Bill is the one who decided to sign twice. That doesn’t look like a household “mix‑up.” It looks like someone who felt comfortable enough in his status to push past the line and assume there’d be no consequences.
The top of every Michigan nominating petition prints this in bold, right above the signatures:
“WARNING – A PERSON WHO KNOWINGLY SIGNS MORE PETITIONS FOR THE SAME OFFICE THAN THERE ARE PERSONS TO BE ELECTED TO THE OFFICE, SIGNS A PETITION MORE THAN ONCE, OR SIGNS A NAME OTHER THAN HIS OR HER OWN IS VIOLATING THE PROVISIONS OF THE MICHIGAN ELECTION LAW.”

This is exactly the kind of underhanded, insider behavior people are sick of in Hillsdale: college employees using their institutional power, their media platform, and even the basic mechanics of ballot access to tilt the playing field and lock in control.
These are the documents. These are the signatures. This is Bill Zeiser’s handwriting in black and white. Voters in Ward 3—and across Hillsdale—can decide for themselves what it says about the kind of “leadership” the college is trying to install at city
Hillsdale College loves to talk about honor. Every freshman signs the Honor Code, pledging to be “honorable in conduct” and “honest in word and deed” and “respectful of the rights of others.” The college’s own Student Life materials say the Honor Code “is a requirement of all who work and study here,” and staff are separately bound by a Code of Commitment that stresses honesty, clear communication, and responsibility for their conduct.
So here’s a fair question for Hillsdale College leadership: when a staff member who advises the student newspaper and represents the college in the community signs two nominating petitions for the same city‑council office, while running an anonymous attack account on local citizens, is that consistent with being “honorable in conduct” and “honest in word and deed”?
If the Honor Code and staff commitments are supposed to mean anything, they have to apply to the adults on the college payroll too—not just the 18‑year‑olds who are required to sign them.

Two nominating petition forms for the same Ward 3 city council seat in the City of Hillsdale, Michigan. On the left is the petition form for Matthew Kniffin (currently the Planning Commission's secretary and representative of that commission to the the Zoning Board of Appeals), and on the right is the petition form for John C. Kast. There is only one seat up for grabs in Ward 3 in this election cycle, and a person is only allowed to sign a petition for one candidate in that race. The petition forms clearly show that the 7th signature on Kniffin's form is that of former council member and Hillsdale College's Social Media Director, Willam G. Zeiser. The 12th signature on Kast's form is also, very clearly, William G. Zeiser. His wife, Amber Zeiser, only signed Kast's petition form, coming in at the 13th signature. She did not sign Kniffin's petition form.

All art is political, John. All of it. No exceptions. The fact that I have to point this out to you, a Hillsdale College professor, shows just how badly that institution has lost its way.

It’s of course possible to distinguish between the public work of artists and their private lives, and to esteem one and not the other. Yet Kahlo blurred these categories. She turned her art into a tool of Soviet propaganda. One of her final paintings is about as subtle as its title: “Marxism Will Give Health to the Sick.” She suffered from physical maladies for much of her life, but she wanted to overcome them so she could inject politics into her paintings. “I should struggle with all my strength for the little that is positive that my health allows me to do in the direction of helping the Revolution,” she wrote in 1951. She called it “the only real reason to live.”

Hillsdale College journalism program director John Miller, writing for the Wall Street Journal, published a piece titled "Art for Communism's Sake," which he shared on his Facebook page with the text, "My latest: Frida Kahlo was a Commie."

The top of the article on WSJ's site includes the slug "Frida Kahlo was an unapologetic booster of come of history's greatest monsters."
