I'm digging out my moribund series "Who the F*** Are All These F***s?" as we gaze into the barrel of a shotgun primary in Maine. A-to-Z Polling is the source for poll data.

The race is on to find a new candidate for the United States Senate, with nominee Graham Platner pulling himself out of contention after he was accused of sexual assault.

The Maine Democratic Party has just a few days to get a new nominee across the finish line, as the ballot locks in next week.

Platner has not, as of 7/9/26, formally withdrawn from the ballot, but whatever. We’re assuming he’ll probably do that... right?

24% of voters think Platner should have stuck in the race, while 72% of voters view Platner unfavorably.

Three contenders polled against Susan Collins performed similarly well, with each gaining 47% support. Collins waivered between 46 and 48%.

Three of the candidates had failed bids for governor this year. Two – Jackson and Bellows – are allied to some extent with gubernatorial nominee (i.e., the person they lost to) Hannah Pingree.

Nirav Shah was acting director of the CDC for a little over a week. He was born in Wisconsin but had the misfortune to become the director of the Maine CDC in 2019. No big surprise, then, that Shah made his name in Maine as the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Shah became popular in Maine with his personable manner and the way he humanized the pandemic. After leaving CDC in 2025, he returned to Maine to teach at Colby College. He placed 2nd in the gubernatorial primary.

Troy Jackson got his start in politics in a logging blockade. Why, yes, he is from The County, how did you know? Jackson has been a union man since before he was a politician, and he’s been a politician for a while – fairly consistently since 2002, serving in both the Maine House and Maine Senate. Socially conservative in his early days, he’s become a leading progressive in the state. In 2016, he was one of a handful of DNC “superdelegates” to back Bernie Sanders’ presidential bid. He placed 3rd in the gubernatorial primary.

Shenna Bellows ran the ACLU of Maine, then Mainers United for Marriage, and then lost a bid for the Senate to Susan Collins in 2014. Collins was, of course, a lot more popular then. Bellows has more in common with Shah (she was born in Massachusetts but raised in Maine; neither have a lot of experience in elected office), and is best known for her stint as the secretary of state since 2021. Famously, she was one of a handful of state officials around the country to disqualify Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot because of his failed coup d’etat attempt, though her disqualification was overturned by Trump v. Anderson. She placed 4th in the gubernatorial primary.

There are also candidates you might have missed, even though they did run for office earlier this year.

Andrea LaFlamme was a candidate for the Democratic nomination as a write-in. Sorry you missed her the first time around. LaFlamme is a health professor and advocate for improved social care. She’s the protestor who chalked Susan Collins – an unusual example of a candidate quite literally taking her challenge to her adversary – and spent a lot of the primary pointing out that a lot of things people attributed to the eventual nominee actually applied to her, like a lifetime of demonstrated support for universal healthcare, mutual aid, a stronger welfare state, etc.

Jordan Wood jumped out of the senate race early to focus on Maine’s 2nd district, but he’s jumping back in. Wood is a Lewiston native with experience in D.C. as chief of staff to Katie Porter (D-Ca.) He cites his life growing up in a working class household in Maine as the basis for his political views – which include higher taxes on the wealthy, capping childcare costs, and universal healthcare. Wood - who is openly gay - is also a strong proponent of LGBTQ+ rights.

Dan Kleban ran in the primary but dropped out to endorse Janet Mills. Now, he’s back, because none of that worked out the way he expected. Kleban is best known as co-founder and owner of Maine Beer Company, one of Maine’s many craft breweries, and one of its most decorated. Kleban says he would chart a path different from “the establishment that has failed us time and again,” but he dropped out really early, folks. He hasn’t had a lot of time in the light with policy positions so... that’s all I have to say about that.
