Dead branches of an oak tree in a local UK woodland in Nottingham. When water becomes scarce, trees enter survival mode, conserving moisture and energy. They reduce the movement of water to their outer branches, prioritising the trunk and roots. Under severe stress, some branches may die back or be shed, helping the tree survive.

At the same time, dehydrated wood becomes more brittle. Combined with the weight of dense summer foliage, long horizontal branches can suddenly fail in a phenomenon known as Summer Branch Drop (SBD). Surprisingly, the risk doesn't always disappear after rain. As branches rapidly rehydrate, the added weight can cause weakened joints to give way.

I always enjoy looking up at the tree's beautiful canopies during woodland walks. Here is one seen in the ancient oak woodland along Golitha Falls in Cornwall, UK where we were on a one-week holiday last week during the heatwave.
Unfortunately I accidentally left my mobile phone settings on low resolution, therefore the quality is not so good. On that day there were tropical temperatures and humidity.

As the UK's largest mainland seabird colony and a designated Special Protection Area, the 400-foot chalk cliffs of Bempton Cliffs Nature Reserve support over half a million breeding birds, including puffins, razorbills, kittiwakes, guillemots and the UK's largest gannet population. It is a significant coastal ecosystem of international importance, playing a vital role in the survival of vulnerable seabird populations.

In Padley Gorge, ancient oak and birch trees grow along gentle slopes, forming the most wonderful twisted shapes, and in the valley below a crystal-clear stream, Burbage Brook, rushes across rocks.

Trees in Padley Gorge are twisted, gnarled, and stunted due to a combination of harsh environmental conditions, thin, rocky soil, and historical management techniques like coppicing and pollarding. These ancient oak and birch trees grow slowly over hundreds of years, adapting to the exposed, windy environment by growing in irregular, dramatic shapes.

Sunlight breaking through the clouds during a walk along the Devon Hooken cliffs woodland last August. In the foreground you see woodland trees and on the right side steep cliffs. #Lichen #scape for some uplifting colours! 💚💛🧡 They are a symbiotic association between a fungus & a photosynthetic partner - an algae or cyanobacteria, representing collaboration, interdependence & interconnectedness of all living beings. #lichen #fungi #fungifriends #EastCoastKin #Photography

Seen on a local hedgerow. Lichen are neither plant or animal, but a symbiotic partnership.
Because lichens thrive on bare rock and in extreme conditions, they are symbols of resilience and adaptability.
Apparently, they are some of the earth’s oldest life-forms, and can live for over 4000 years!

This close-up of a lichen makes them look a bit otherworldly. The circular structures on lichen are called 'apothecia', the sexual reproductive structures of the fungal partner in the lichen symbiosis.
