Last month, Katie Turk (SOAS Partnership PhD student supervised by Dr Tim Craig) presented her work at FENS, the premier European Neuroscience conference. Katie's project is examining the neuroprotective effect of function mushroom extracts (concentrating on Lion's Mane).
Last month Dr Daniel Turnham, Dr Catherine Shelton & UWE MRes student Andreea Cruceanu attended the Nottingham Early Career Prostate Cancer Symposium. Dr Turnham was invited to chair the opening session, while Dr Shelton also gave a poster presentation on some of the other work ongoing in the lab.
Congratulations to Rebecca Braund who successfully defended her DBMS thesis last month! 👏 Her research centred on investigation of variables impacting quality of blood components at NHSBT, and was presented at the British Blood Transfusion Society (BBTS) Congress.

We were delighted to welcome Dimitrios Evangelopoulos, Director of Aeolia Ltd., to kick off discussions under the Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) programme, which supports knowledge exchange between higher education providers and the wider world.
Dr Sotirios Oikonomou, as an invited speaker, presented the team’s latest research at the RME2026 Conference in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, a leading international event focused on rapid measurement technologies and analytical science.
Last week Mo Salehan, Senior Lecturer in Biological Sciences, was invited to We The Curious (WTC) to deliver a session celebrating National Volunteers' Week, highlighting the role of volunteers and their contribution in the UK. He has volunteered for WTC for more than 10 years in a variety of roles.

As part of outreach & public engagement for the partnership PhD project with Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum, Carrie Brady & PhD student Helene Kile took part in the Westonbirt 10K. The route took them through the old & new arboretum & past some of the rarest tree species in the world.
Carrie Brady & the Tree Health research group were pleased to host Dr Milan Pernek from the Croation Forest Research Institute as part of an ongoing collaboration on oak decline. The team took Dr Pernek to the Forest of Dean looking for native oak with symptoms of acute oak decline.

Farewell to Senior Lecturer Ian Wilson, who is retiring after nearly 20 yrs working at UWE. Ian has been a highly respected member of the teaching & research community & spent time at Michigan State University, University of Malaya & Bristol University before joining the School of Applied Sciences.
Congratulations to Christie Antoniou who successfully defended her thesis “Cytotoxic Effect of Phytochemicals from Olive Leaf Extract (OLE) on Leukaemic Cell Lines in Culture,” The work was funded through a partnership PhD with NDT inspections Ltd, Cyprus.
