A beauty and livestock killer who I did not have the pleasure of seeing last year: Lambert’s Locoweed (Oxytropis lambertii)! The toxin it contains is swainsonine which can cause muscle weakness and death in livestock. That’s just nature, you know?

The chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) is an American icon! She grows from coast to coast and apparently makes a very yummy jelly (not jam because her seeds are toxic). Health benefits off the chart and deep roots in Indigenous foodways and medicine. Honestly you just need to look her up. She’s a star!

Ok, let’s get into it! Saw in ‘24 but didn’t record for bsky last year: Stemmy Four-nerved Daisy/Hymenoxys (Tetraneuris scaposa). There is a chance this is Stemless Hymenoxys (T. acaulis, which actually has stems), but I think I decided it’s stemmy. Four-nerves refers to the four veins on petals.

Summary:

In the spring of 1897, Stede Bonnet hired a rag-tag crew to renovate his family’s long-abandoned estate in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Among this crew was groundskeeper Edward Teach. Eager to stay updated on the project, Stede began a regular correspondence with Ed.

Years later, upon the discovery of their correspondence carefully tucked away in a clothes-stuffed closet of the manor, historians concluded that they were not, in fact, just very good friends.
Notes:

I've been wanting to write an epistolary fic for AGES and have had this fic in my WIP for a whiiiiiile, just kind of picking at it, but the spring weather for some reason has really been inspiring me to chip away at it, which is exciting!

I don’t really know how British addresses work and I have no intention to learn. The fact that I did any research at all into locations is a wonder!

Mine is the resilient Cuyahoga! Grew up on her banks. I love her so much I got her tattooed on me (it’s very hard to get an elbow shot but you get the picture)

Tattoo around and under an elbow that is blue and shows the Cuyahoga River plus its tributaries. It forms a roughly squiggly “V” shape around and under the elbow.

When I was home for the holidays I snatched up an empty CD case (the left one) to fit my remaining CDs and now I have one (1) empty slot for a new CD. This is why I made sure my car has a CD player.

Last but not least, a bit of a head-scratcher, I thiiiiiiink this is Tall Goldenrod (Solidago altissima)! You might see some of those ones poking up high and be like “oh, duh, tall” but there are several similarities to S. canadensis that can make this tricky. Overall, I’d say this is S. altissima.

The inflorescence (flower cluster) at the top of the stem is dark yellow, quite pyramidal, and starting to go to seed, so several flowers are becoming white and fluffy.

Ooh, this looks similar to Showy Goldenrod! Surely it is, right? Probably not! No confirmation, but this seems to probably be Downy Ragged Goldenrod (Solidago petiolaris) and if I were smart (jury’s out on that) I’d return to this trail in late summer and try to re-ID them when they’re flowering.

I’m *pretty sure* these (two different plants) are Showy Goldenrod (Solidago speciosa)! The fact that their inflorescences are more plume (or club)-shaped helps with ID, but as you’ll see in the next post, it doesn’t guarantee a sure giveaway to species. These are going to seed.

I was unsure about this for a bit, but a kind stranger on iNaturalist (there are many there) finally confirmed that this is Plains Milkweed (Asclepias pumila)! That adds another to my milkweed list! (It looked like Whorled Milkweed to me, A. verticillata, but this is too west and a bit different).

The vampires are in a windowless van, dressed in a variety of festive regalia and robes. Nick is driving the van and Viago is in the front passenger seat. Deacon and Vladislav are sitting on the floor behind the seats, addressing the documentary crew.

“Ja, so ve’re going to ze Krampuslauf in x tonight, and ve are soooo excited,” Viago calls from the front seat. “Und zis is Nick’s first time experiencing ze unholy holiday, so ve are going to have so much fun.”

He looks back at the camera and smiles brightly, fangs poking out a bit.

“Unfortunately, we cannot go out much for summer activities in New Zealand,” Vlad explains, and Deacon nods knowingly. “Traditionally a Krampuslauf in the old countries would be in winter, so it would be dark early enough to get a full night of debauchery in, but because we are at the bottom of the globe, everything is upside down.”

Stede sweeps out of the biting cold air into the glowing warmth of Ed’s bar and swiftly navigates through crowds of people, several wearing horns, to the end of the bar, where Ed is checking his phone.

“Ed! Gruß vom Krampus!“ Stede cries, and feels some of the outside chill leave him as Ed looks up with a wide grin on his face.

“Gruß vom Krampus, mate. Glad you could make it.” Instinctively, Ed pulls him in for a side hug, and if Stede pulls Ed in closer than usual, squeezing his side, neither say anything, they just smile deeper about it.

Honestly I’m very sure this is Panicled Aster (Symphyotrichum lanceolatum), though some guides say it’s outside of range. I’m still learning botany, but I know enough about enough local aster species to be pretty sure. The friend in the fourth photo is a Dainty Sulphur (Nathalis iole)!

On the furthest left flower is a small pale yellow butterfly with a little bit of light blue on it and a few small black dots, called a Dainty Sulphur.

We are entering the uncertain zone! (Aka plants I’m not 100% sure on). First up is I’m pretty sure is Hairy Evening Primrose (Oenothera villosa) but could just be Common Evening Primrose (O. biennis). One source says the Diné mixed the dried leaves of this plant with tobacco and smoked the mixture.
