Vannacci said he too was surprised by his success, but for De Angelis suspected it was due to "his contacts with foreign intelligence services, especially Russian ones, following his time in Moscow." Between 2021 and 2022, Vannacci worked as a military attaché at the Italian Embassy in Moscow.

The book sold 20,000 copies in its first week: in Italy, this is an impressive result for a self-published book by an unknown author and without any particular advertising campaign. It was also published in mid-August, the worst possible moment in Italian publishing.

De Angelis also said that Vannacci was in contact with Tommaso Foti, a prominent member of Brothers of Italy and now Minister for European Affairs. "Vannacci told me he needed 50,000 preferential votes to get elected, and the book was meant for that: to pave the way," said De Angelis.

THE STORY VERY FEW KNOW How is it possible for a man to become a successful politician in three years, starting from nothing? This is where the story gets really interesting. First, before his book was published, Vannacci's military career was by then considered to be at a dead end.

In 2025, Vannacci officially joined the League and became vice president of the party. But in February 2026 he launched his own political party, National Future, and now he wants to become the new leader of the Italian far-right.

Italian media started talking about him and his possible entry into national politics. In June 2024, he became MEP as an independent candidate of the League, a well-known far-right party led by Matteo Salvini (who was facing a slump in support at that time).

THE STORY EVERYBODY KNOWS Vannacci became famous out of nowhere in Summer 2023, when his book - 'The World Upside Down', a far-right manifesto he self-published on Amazon - became an unexpected publishing success, landing him on the front pages of newspapers.

There is a new rising far-right party in Italy, and if you are interested in right-wing populism this is a story you must know. This man is Roberto Vannacci: a military general, MEP, and the leader of National Future, a neo-fascist party he founded last February. Recent polls put it at 6%. 🧵
