The Sallyangie album comes later after I finished the main discography, as well as The Consequences of Indecisions, which is a Pekka Pohjola album marketed as an Oldfield album, as he plays on it. I have that one with that weird white cover But I don't own Airborne yet
I think this detail on my guitar strap shows how important Mike Oldfield's music is to me as a person and artist
1983: Crises I cannot talk about this album objectively. I grew up on this! This is my childhood and one of my all-time favourite albums! This lush reverby sound is incredible (the Quantec Room Simulator is even mentioned as an instrument!) This is the album that made me want to play music myself!
1982: Five Miles Out A very Fairlight-heavy album with a fairly dry production. Not my favourite but I still enjoy it a lot! Highlight is of course the epic Taurus II, but it also includes Family Man, which is a nice pop song that was famously covered by Hall & Oates
1980: QE2 Named after a ship, this album features drums by Phil Collins on the first two songs! It's mostly instrumental and without the disco sound (despite including an ABBA cover), so I recommend this over the previous album. Highlights are Taurus 1 and the title track
1979: Platinum That disco album. Featuring a suite of four songs on side 1 which is pretty good tbh, especially the North Star finale. Side 2 has songs of varying quality... they are okay, but the first side definitely wins!
1979: Exposed His first live album. Recorded on tour after he underwent a really controversial therapy to deal with his insecurities and low self-confidence. It includes some at times pretty drastic reworking of Incantations and Tubular Bells plus his disco song Guilty but it's nothing essential imo
1978: Incantations An album that is pretty unique in his discography. Not only is it built up like a classical symphony in four movements, it is also heavily influenced by minimal composers like Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Some parts go on for too long, apart from that it is really brilliant.
1975: Ommadawn His first true masterpiece! What an emotional journey this album is. Calm moments, happy sections and then some very dark stuff. It's got everything! And the climax to Part 1 is probably one of the most intense moments in his whole discography!
1974: Hergest Ridge Much calmer than the first album and that's what I like about it. Overall a sound to sink into. And then there's the Electric Thunderstorm section in Part 2, which is pretty heavy and quite unusual.
Going on a Mike Oldfield discography run! 1973: Tubular Bells An album that was quite impressive at that time and stayed in the UK albums charts for 288 weeks! In retrospect it's not his best, but it's got its moments.
