Khaluun’s moon eye bathed the spring in silver light, turning the vibrant colours of the day to frosted, wintry whites. I stepped out of the shadows, and undressed in full view of my god. Discarding my dress, the way a human would in Ayine’s temple. I loved the way his eye gazed at my body, shining the same bright shade of moonlight as everything under his gaze. Even my black hair must have glinted like steel from where he was, looking down at all of us.

Looking down at me, the loveliest of his creations.

I bowed to him, before walking to the spring. His silver gaze followed me. Gods, it had been so long since I had been able to bare myself to my creator. Now, if my party or their dragons saw my body, they would say, “Ah, of course, he’s half elf!” and not “That isn’t how humans are supposed to look.” When they saw the root pressing its way out of where a human’s heart would be, when they saw my black nipples and the inhuman shade of my labia, they would have no questions.

I heard heavy footsteps coming toward me, and waited an extra few seconds to be seen by whoever was coming before ducking under the water.

A snippet of a novel. It reads: “...huh. Trouble with the guards? Or, with the monarchy?” They probed. One of their ears tilted toward me, but the other stayed vigilant.

“Monarchy, if I had to choose.” I smirked, suddenly knowing what this was. The elf reached into their pocket and unearthed a crumpled pamphlet.

“You know what you’re doing. Could use your help. Think about helping out, okay?”

I took the pamphlet, politely. I wondered if it was the same one they’d been given when they joined whatever little revolutionary sect they were a part of. There were a bunch of them, all forming a loose network of thorns in the Queen’s side. They all sort of disagreed how to do that most effectively, but they could work together when they needed.

“I would rather not get in your way, considering the importance of...whatever you’re doing. What are you looking for?” I asked, stuffing the pamphlet into my satchel. I’d dump the pamphlet somewhere one I got out of here. I appreciated their intentions, but this wasn’t my fight. Not my kingdom, not my queen, not my people.

“The officer’s quarters.” The elf gave it up too quickly, too easily.

“A word of advice, lie next time a shady stranger asks you where you’re sneaking to.” Their ears flicked with amusement.

His foot rests on the thigh of Nara, a fat, grey-blue fallen angel. Nara is wearing nothing except a lacy white bra. It is on its knees, legs splayed a little apart, but its hands are tastefully placed in front of whatever they have down there. Its head is completely covered by a crossed pair of wings, and it has a second pair of wings on its shoulders. Every wing has a cluster of eyes on it.
In the background there are two more demons. A small imp with dark grey skin (Hena) sits on a stool with his legs crossed, wearing a short dress with a lot of ruffles. I had to draw so many ruffles. I had to shade. So. Many. Ruffles. Hena has one pair of small black horns, and is bald.
The last demon (Seth) is a tall red demon with thick, draconic wings and spikes breaking the skin on his shoulders. He has several tall red horns, and long dark brown hair. Seth's eyes are huge and yellow.

A snippet of a work in progress novel. It reads: It was like he forgot when his silly poetry group met up every single month, and I was the one who had to make up the time. Would it kill him to get it done a day or two early?

Well. It might kill him to continue getting it done this late. I might kill him tonight. That thought pleased me, even if it was only a fantasy. With Ashari on my side, I felt Andenon’s death drawing closer, like it was a storm I could see on the horizon. As I set out my quills and begun the painstaking work of copying the poems, I fantasized about how I would do it. The violent urge overtook me once or twice, and I always set my quill aside to avoid scratching a hole in the parchment. I thought I could control myself, but I wasn’t going to risk more money being taken from my wages.

Just last night, those urges got me into even more trouble, didn’t they? The kind of trouble that had me receiving letters on a noble’s personal letterhead. Tiernan belonged to the Faer Lord. In threatening him, I had endangered the ward-depending on the point of view, the firstborn-of a rich fae, or a rich Hin who thought he was fae.

A snippet of a WIP novel. It reads: I pulled the half-broken scissors from my vest and ran the dull blade along the stem where it attached to my vein. Aoife stared at it like it was the most interesting thing she had ever seen, leaning forward. For a moment I suspected she had seen my breasts and was about to ask gender-related questions, but that’s not what she said.

“Huh. Pretty rare to see someone working for a noble worshipping Doun! I bet you had an interesting trajectory to your job!”

I shrugged, popping the heads off the hock flowers.

“It’s not good luck to be enslaved by a noble. Going from a worshipper of Doun to a slave is not particularly interesting.”

She...didn’t look at me. It occurred to me just for a moment that I didn’t know if she knew I was an indenture. I felt something kind of squirmy in my gut.

Do you really not recognize the feeling of guilt? Ashari’s dry amusement made me roll my eyes.

The flowers went into a mortar and pestle, and I started grinding. It was a different one than I used for food, obviously. Some ingredients were only mildly poisonous at this stage, but hocks on their own could be deadly.

Why would I feel guilty? I’m the one who’s a slave. Yes, I had been thinking about poison so I didn’t have to think about the big, weird emotion. Don’t tell me you’ve never done it.

His dress is simple, with a turtleneck and long sleeves that end at the wrist. He has a tight choker of pearls just over the turtleneck and a pendant that hangs down on his chest. The pendant is half a pair of scissors. He is, wearing high heels and probably regrets that choice. Duvall's hair is short and terminates in a widow's peak.

A snippet of a work in progress novel. It reads: The feeling came to me first. Fear, pure and desperate. An overwhelming sense of wrongness overtook me and I bolted upright.

“We have to go!” I shouted, already scrambling to my feet. My bag was already slung around my shoulder, and the forage followed. My knives. What else could I take?

No time.

As if clay in the hands of an incompetent sculptor, the water in the centre of the pond pulled up and up into a tall, lumpy pillar. The koi was suspended right at the top, its dark eyes on us. I had no doubt it knew what was about to happen to it as the water started to glow, as the light twisted itself into strange prismatic artifacts that made my eyes burn. It was like making eye contact with all of Khaluun’s pupils at once.

I looked away as the shadow of the koi started to stretch and deform. There was no saving it now.

Around us, I was starting to hear the oasis stir. All of the birds in the trees around us took off, wings beating hard, clumsily stumbling from nests, still half asleep but knowing they had to move.

Feet and paws and hooves were next, our camp suddenly swarmed by hundreds of animals moving in a stampede. The ground shook, and I tried to shout for us all to run. Nobody heard me. It was already too loud, already too late.

$A snipped of a novel work in progress. It reads: \The threads were already an abstraction, magic wasn’t really that shape, I just needed to find a way to work with the way we saw magic. It was easier for artists, I needed some kind of craft or art to, but it was starting not to look like threads anymore, it was starting to fray and- It didn’t feel any easier to abstract the feeling, the sensation. I could feel it in my teeth, in my marrow, vibrating my eyes. My skull swelled with the information. It was too much. I needed to process it as something, anything other than the pure manna of reality. Some sort of art, like something to do with knots, or weaving, or-I could feel it vibrating in my fingertips. I was pretty sure tapestries didn’t do that. It was too, it was- Music. I knew how to play the piano. Pianos were filled with strings being hit with hammers, which was just about how my skull was feeling right then. That’s right. There was no colour but black and white and white and black repeating. No smell. My mind tried to supply the scents of wood and polish, but I refuted them. No piano, just the keys. There was sound, I could allow sound. Eighty-eight keys. Eighty-eight threads, though I only needed to pay attention to a few. A chord, a triad. Myself as the root, Ashari the third, and for the fifth... The Renai was not difficult to find. Its threads twinged sharply, discordantly, like it was trying to escape its tie to the rest of the world. It buzzed against my hands when I grasped them. I curled my body-thread around a finger, ready to play.$

A snippet of a work in progress novel. It reads: My fingers found the needle tucked into the weft of the weaving, with its enormous eye and blunted end. There were threads set aside, threads that had been cut out or unthreaded from the tapestry. I threaded a bright red thread through the needle, thinking of Mother. Her lips even without the paint nobles wore in Floret, a bright apple-red. Then white, like her skin. Black, like my hair, like Mother’s, like Mother’s dark eyes that had always looked at me with so much love.

Like I was her own.

I was her own. It was hard to remember that when it had been so, so long but when Mother was there, I never thought of another family.

I strung one colour in, worked it through the warp and the weft until I was called to switch, from white to red to black to white and on. The needle clacked and scraped lightly against the wood of the loom as I worked, closing my eyes tight as Doun guided my hand.

If my fate was to live an unassuming life here with my birth parents, then in a way I had Doun to thank for the fact I was sitting here, hoping for a chance to meet them. Hoping that any-

The wildlands are a biome similar to Canadian prairies, ruined by Hellmouths and Witchgraves sapping all the energy and magic from the land. Because of Reasons, there were few hin and elves to fix the wildlands, so it's only this nice close to Floret #wipsnips #writingcommunity #amwriting

A snipped of a work in progress novel. It reads: The wildlands got as much rain as the rest of the Witchless Lands, but the grass here was always short and patchy, bare earth visible in depressingly long swathes. Parts of the buffalograss were just now starting to turn green, but some of it would stay dry and rasping yellow all year; the rest would wait until summer to grow. Never as tall as it used to, and shorter every year.

It wasn’t really warm enough for the grasses yet, anyways. The tallest stalks, the sideoats and purpletop, swayed and rustled together like they were gossiping about what the hell we were doing there. Yucca grew here and there, sharp-looking leaves bursting out in all directions, so small compared to the ones they grew in Floret. We passed one that was fasciated to all hells, a visible bald patch where the center mass had stretched and spread during growth.

“Yes, we can.” I had no doubt. I’d learned not to doubt. It was pointless, when one already held himself to the highest standard of performance. Either I was already doing enough, or nothing would have been enough.

Caught a perfect cutiefly (evolved) and had to name it after a Bugsnac #bugsnax #pokemon #pokemongo #ribombee

A Ribombee tagged with "Perfection" for pokemon with perfect stats and "Fight Club" for Pokemon I'm training to fight. It is named Hunnabee (hun ah bee) like the Bug Snack. Ribombee is a vaguely human shaped Pokemon with a yellow and white head, transparent wings and something that looks like a brown scarf around its neck. It has a V shaped set of antennae on its head, big adorable green eyes, and short black legs that end in circular "feet". The legs resemble childish drawings of insect antennae.

A small snippet of a manuscript. Tiernan and Virecha finally made it onto the scene. He jumped off her, and glanced my way.

“Ashari.” I insisted. He didn’t hesitate, kneeling at her side and taking over Aoife’s work.

“Go help Cehris with Duvall.” His voice was terse, and Aoife took his orders without question. Cehris picked me up, half holding me in her arms.

“I need your help with this. I managed to stop the bleeding here,” She patted my now-whole gut, “But his leg’s still rough, and I think he’s got a head injury.” Cehris’ speech was half panting. She must have healed so much to be exhausted by now, but everything still hurt.

Aoife stretched my leg out, and I invented new syllables to curse her with. Cehris cradled my head in her hands and lay a small, calming spell over my forehead.

“What the hell happened, man? Who were they?”

“I don’t know.” I breathed. My lungs hurt. Speaking any louder would have probably been agony.

“What the fuck do you mean, man? You knew they were coming for you.”

I stayed silent.

“Come on, man! You nearly got killed about this.” I had to make a lie up. My head felt a little

He curled his lip back, looking for all the world like one of the plains dogs hin were descended from. He clenched his fists. Held them to the table so hard I thought he might break through the wood. Shook his head and muttered and jerked. But slowly, he reached out with his left, corralled it with his right as his resolve failed. Once, twice, he reached out. A twinge of red bloomed at one corner of his huge doll eyes, a wildfire that spread and soon consumed those soft browns, turning his iris an unnatural blazing shade.

A shiny Lotad named Miror B (spelled with one R, after the best antagonist in any Pokemon game). He is tagged with "3 Stars" for his high stats "EVO", a tag I use to remind myself what Pokemon I want to evolve, "Besties" because I love him and "Fight Club" for the Pokemon I'm training for battles. Whereas normal Lotad have a bright green leaf and blue body, shiny Lotad have a mint green leaf and a maroon body.

I waved a hand lazily.

“Calm down. Jher’s eyes, aren’t you supposed to be keeping a secret? Can’t tell me about Robin, but you can shout at a ser who asks the wrong questions? If it’s not so bad as all that, why isn’t it something you can tell me?”

The human’s eyes darted around, like he was just realizing the other had shouted. Poor boy must have been half-deaf from working with the stonefolk.

“It’s not that. It’s not a crime. Right, Arden? Right, it’d be fine to tell him?” The human whispered, like he could take back his partner’s shouting.

The stonefolk’s metallic beard ruffled with annoyance, and the human took that as permission.

“Right, it’s fine. I mean, if he finds out the Good Lord,” Here I inferred the human meant the Faer Lord, but didn’t want to say his title for some reason, “Isn’t going to be happy, but...”

The stonefolk’s beard did that hand thing again, splitting into five portions and wiggling its tendrils like fingers fallen asleep.

“He has a fae friend who does little magics for the people. It’s a bit of a trade, I suppose, because that sort come through saying they’ve got a gift for Robin, and if we don’t let them in it all gets to be a big mess.” The stonefolk relented.

“Can’t get anything from the fey without a little payment, see, so Robin gets mad when he doesn’t get it. Then that Lord comes here and raises hell, since he’s made himself the go-between for Robin and the Petals.”
