Nonsense. I've been out of academia for a bit, but it's easy to make an affirmative defense. 1. The Sonderweg thesis has been dispatched, leading to better comparative analysis of 19th century states. 2. Moderate functionalism has proven useful in explaining the Holocaust.

To my knowledge, Logics of History has only one edition, published in 2005. (No other is listed on Sewell's CV.) The final, still incorrect quote ('is' should be 'was') is still misattributed. It is actually in the section 'The Political Unconscious of Social and Cultural history'.

I think the comment about nice people never going Nazi is wrong. Nice isn't good. And the character sketches of those who never go Nazi seem a bit too elitist for my taste. My never Nazis are all socialists. But I have certainly met Messrs. J, G, C, and B and perhaps a Ms. E.

It's fun-a macabre sort of fun-this parlor game of "Who Goes Nazi?" And it simplifies things-asking the question in regard to specific personalities.
Kind, good, happy, gentlemanly, secure people never go Nazi. They may be the gentle philosopher whose name is in the Blue Book, or Bill from City College to whom democracy gave a chance to design airplanes-you'll never make Nazis out of them. I am sure Dr Hill appreciates how in Kalenjin, as in English, omitting certain letters, for example the from hominoid, can dramatically alter the sense.
