Not because he doubts Viktor is telling the truth—rather, Jayce doubts that this truth can exist at all. It is inconceivable. Inconvenient even, given his recent vow; and he cannot begin to contend with the thought that in this, or in any reality, Viktor could love him. Loves him, still. That he could want him in the same ways Jayce had always wanted Viktor. That he was hurting, not because Jayce was near—but because he was too far away from him, just out of reach.

"I can promise you this much, though," Viktor all but whispers. "You are worth whatever fate or failure comes from trying to be together. I would take the risk, even if it dooms us both."
