[Panel 1] Smug as ever, he continues. “You two are the Saviors of Magic, after all. If there’s someone who knows what needs to be done, it’s you.”

[Panel 2] He turns his attention to the side of the table where the other branch of the Cavendish family is seated. “We could still take you with us, Lady Daryl, Miss Merrill, Miss Maril.” The girls join hands in excitement, as their mother fakes a smile.

[Panel 3] Unfortunately for her, her daughters already made their decision, even reaching over the table in joy. “Vacations, sister !” “We haven't gone on one in ages !” That settles it, much to the chagrin of Daryl.

[Panel 4] Akko is overjoyed to stay, and Diana is once again under her charm, due to her smile but also her very sweet intervention.

[Panel 5] Their fingers, still locked together, tenderly rub against each other.

[Panel 6] With a discreet and satisfied look to her side, Akko whispers to her. “You owe me one.”

[Panel 7] “I certainly do, just ask what anytime.” She replies, just as satisfied as her knight in shining armor– or dress.

[Panel 8] Akko stares at her with an amused smile.

[Panel 9] She finally answers. “I’ll think about it.”

[Panel 10] “But be sure I’m going to collect the debt before summer is over.” Without noticing, their hands lock their little fingers together, like they wished it could last a moment longer before parting ways.

[Panel 1] Akko finally speaks out for her and Diana. “You’re very generous, Mr. Hanbridge– and I’m sorry to turn down the offer, but I don’t think we can go.”

[Panel 2] She holds Diana’s hand, their fingers interlaced, to give herself courage and Diana some relief.

[Panel 3] Frank is shocked his friends just refused to spend the summer with them. “Aw, why not ?” He says with a heartbroken voice.

[Panel 4] Shoot, she didn’t think she would have to justify herself. “Well, Diana and I have a, um… important research to do in the coming weeks. You know, as the uh, ones who brought magic back ?” Damn, that was not a solid excuse at all, Akko !

[Panel 5] “Research ?” Daryl is not buying it.

[Panel 6] But that opens an opportunity for her to elaborate on this shaky foundation “Yeah you see, there are some magic spells and potions we…” Akko desperately waves her arms around trying to come up with something, while searching for Diana’s approval in her eyes. “uhh… promised some teachers at Luna Nova we’d work on…” Diana keeps nodding to her nonsense “It’s been a long time since magic was available worldwide so we need to research more about… magic flows and the Yggdrasil tree’s roots, you know. That’s why we both came to the Cavendish Manor.”

[Panel 7] Daryl reflects on Akko’s words, her hand to her mouth. “I wasn’t aware you’d have that kind of homework.” She’s still dubitative but Akko’s improvisation worked.

[Panel 8] Andrew doesn’t get why Akko’s so blatantly lying about this and glares at her.

[Panel 9] Well, if he’s gonna glare at her, why not glare back ? She frowns and sends him a really upset stare. “You better not say a thing” is almost written on her face.

[Panel 10] “Ah, well.” Andrew starts.

[Panel 11] “We wouldn’t want to interrupt your very important research, then.” Pinch of sarcasm aside, this should let them off the hook.

[Panel 1] Paul continues his strangely exaggerated motions, grabbing Frank’s shoulder and then immediately letting it go to do some more hand gestures as he speaks. “What an absolutely delightful idea, young lad ! You are cordially invited with the girls, Daryl !” Oh no, he really couldn’t have chosen the worst day to drink too much.

[Panel 2] Daryl tries to escape his invitation. “Oh no, we couldn’t accept this invitation.”

[Panel 3] She joins her hands trying to charm her way out of this catastrophic plan. “You know we could never aff– We definitely would not want to intrude.” Oops, her tongue slipped.

[Panel 4] And unfortunately, Paul may be drunk but he is not deaf. He shakes his hand in protestation. “Nonsense ! Money is no problem at all, consider all your expenses covered, if that’s the problem.” He sure is more generous with enough wine.

[Panel 5] Even worse, the twins actually want to go, and their mother is now trapped between her pleading daughters and Paul’s enthusiasm.

[Panel 6] Diana still hasn’t said a word, frozen by this development.

[Panel 7] Andrew gives up. “Well, if everyone agrees…”

[Panel 8] She clenches her fists in defeat, hidden under the table.

[Panel 9] Akko’s hand gently lands on hers.

[Panel 1] The twins and their mother gladly answer to this distraction, taking turns to give their individual replies. “Oh, nothing special, really.” “Yes, enjoy the weather and maybe go out with friends.” “What about you ? Do you have any interesting plans ?” Daryl asks back, trying to get the conversation going.

[Panel 2] Andrew replies, his arms tensely crossed. “Well we planned on leaving for our condos in the Isles of Scilly next week, as we usually do.”

[Panel 3] Frank excitedly grabs him by the shoulder. “Oh, Andrew. I just had the most amazing idea ! Why don’t we take the Cavendish ladies and Miss Akko with us this time around ?”

[Panel 4] This single sentence is enough to make Diana feel like she was struck by lightning.

[Panel 5] She does the math in her head, and it’s a pretty clear picture : Being stuck on an island for days with her family AND the Hanbridges ?! That’s a disaster waiting to happen !

[Panel 6] She is mortified and stays stunned as her imagination runs wild on how bad things could get on this trip. Akko notices her distress.

[Panel 7] And she won’t let Frank’s silly idea ruin summer for Diana.

[Panel 1] “Oh, Paul.” Daryl softly but awkwardly replies “Let’s not discuss business over food.” She seems… tense.

[Panel 2] Akko and Diana look at each other, perplexed by Daryl’s sudden shyness over business conversations since she’s never had that problem before.

[Panel 3] Drunk, Paul goes on like nothing happened. “Right, right ! But as a Minister of State, it’s now my responsibility to forge bonds with witches. And we could be very beneficial to each other.” He claims, another glass ready to be emptied in hand.

[Panel 4] “Dad, why don’t we skip the conversation until tomorrow, when you’re feeling better ?” Andrew tries to reason his father to give up now before he regrets it.

[Panel 5] The drink has been half emptied in less than Andrew’s intervention. “What ? I’m perfectly fine !” Denies Paul.

[Panel 6] Daryl is getting really uncomfortable. And silent.

[Panel 7] Making large gestures he continues despite the cold attitude of his host. “Magic has so much potential ! We couldn’t possibly let that pass !”

[Panel 8] Diana is weirded out by how out of the blue this whole situation feels.

[Panel 9] Even for Akko, enjoying your dinner gets difficult when someone makes a fool out of himself in front of everyone. The room is awfully quiet.

[Panel 10] Andrew tries again. “Why don’t we change the subject ?”

[Panel 11] And thankfully, Frank catches this opportunity to save the dinner, or at least spark just enough talking to forget about it. “So… what plans do you have for the rest of the summer ?”

[Panel 1] Everyone meets up at the lobby, dressed up for dinner. “Excellent ! We’re finally all here, let us proceed to the dining hall.” Daryl exclaims.

[Panel 2] As they move to their destination, pairs form up, and begin to chit chat. Not for Merryl though, she is too busy thinking to herself, as she looks at Akko, her arm resting in Diana’s : “Wait– isn’t that my dress ?”

[Panel 3] Surprisingly, the dinner is agreeable enough ; guests are talking, laughing and drinking at the table.

[Panel 4] Diana is eating a refined meal. Distincts “Clink” can be heard, everyone is enjoying their meal.

[Panel 5] Paul is in a surprisingly good mood, laughing and talking to everyone : again, not the usual facade he brings with him.

[Panel 6] Akko is laughing out loud and smiling. Honest as she is, she wears her current mood on her face at all times : she is having a great time.

[Panel 7] “No, no ! That was before !” “Oh, yes ! Absolutely true !” Diana only catches glimpses of Akko’s conversation with the others, but it’s fine. She drinks a sip. Maybe it’s not going to be so bad this time around, and she will try to enjoy it a little too. Or, at least get some extra hours of Akko’s smile to stare at less than discreetly.

[Panel 8] Paul’s voice booms. “So, Daryl.” Oh. That's not how he sounded earlier, must have had too much wine. “Now that magic isn’t an issue as a resource, we could revisit that business we talked a while ago.” Urgh, the main subject of tonight’s dinner makes its entrance, to Diana’s utter displeasure.

[Panel 1] Akko knocks gently at the door. “Diana ? Are you ready ?” “Yes, give me one moment.” Diana answers from behind it.

[Panel 2] “Hooo… I wonder what we’ll eat...” Akko thinks to herself, quite worked up about tonight.

[Panel 3] Diana finally opens the door, revealing her in a set of handsome masculine clothing, still adjusting her neckpiece. “Oh! Oh, WOW !” Akko is very enthusiastic about tonight’s Diana, and of course the handsome one doesn’t miss another opportunity to blush from all this excitement.

[Panel 4] Akko is smiling with all her face, her eyes riveted on her, you’d forget she’s supposed to play noble at this dinner too. “Diana, you look fantastic !”

[Panel 5] “You think ? Since you were going in a dress, I thought we could match…” Look at her acting all shy suddenly; she quite cleverly asks her to accompany her without telling it to her face, but she can’t look at her and keep touching her necklace. “Well, you look more like nobility than I do, that’s for sure !”

[Panel 6] “Shall we ?” She smoothly proposes her arm with a smile to Akko, who plays along. “Certainly, Miss Cavendish !”

[Panel 7] Akko holds herself to Diana’s arm, and playfully teases her. “Looking forward to the dinner party ?” She mischievously smiles, waiting for Diana’s answer, who is keeping her chin up and proud to hide how nervous she’s making her right now.

[Panel 8] She makes a painful face. “I’m afraid I’ll be bored out of my mind.” Akko laughs. “Not with me there !”

And some of the references (I had a lot!) but presented in a nicer manner. I tried to keep the Cavendish flair.

Reference boards with notes explaining the inspiration. There's many photographs, many from the Leeds Castle in Kent, but other only showing classic libraries in mansions. Medieval, Rococo and Art Nouveau styles all working together to depict the long history of the Cavendish family.
