If this is the role, I think it's a great appointment. The complete lack of interest in Mark Carney's attempts to set up new financial instruments to boost defence funding has been scandalous. I think Gordon Brown will be an asset in this respect.
Well if No10s response is any bit as bad as the Secretary of State for Wales then I don't think we've reached the nadir yet.
It's 09:15 and the national grid is currently only using 1.1GW of electricity produced via Gas. There's still another 8GW of solar to come online as the sun comes up. Who says making the grid net zero is impossible???

This is the lowest amount of Gas on the grid I have ever seen. We are so close to going fossil fuel free on the Grid for the first time since the 1800s. Is today the day we switch them all off?
Could tonight be the night they test a gas free grid? Demand usually falls 7-8 GW at night. Lots of factors obviously but right now we are generating enough to do it with transfers from the continent. Probably needs solar to get the right geographic spread of generation but it's nice to dream.

I'm talking about EU citizens using UK e-gates. Also, the french-uk border controls are not comparable with the rest of the UK border. There's different agreements in place. If you were German flying to Heathrow you could use the e gate when you arrive and not require a stamp.
