Serious 🌋 science. None of the pretentiousness. Asst Prof of minerals & magma-wrangling (socials are not a reflection of my employer’s views).
Happy Summer Solstice from a tiny cottage on the edge of Puget Sound! With all the oysters & lavender & geology so readily available, I think the Olympic Peninsula might just be my new favorite place. It’s GORGEOUS here!
Just got my paper copy of the new Petrology book I’m adopting next semester. 💃🎉😊🌋 It’s well-written & I thoroughly enjoy the footnoted commentary on some of the more historical aspects of petrology, too! 🤣
I’m very excited to announce that the always fantastic field geologist Dr. John Wakabayashi is invited as Wichita State Geology’s Watkins Lecturer next Wed & Thurs, 12-13 Nov. If you’re around south-central KS/northern OK & interested in Earth Science, this is a multi-day event not to be missed!!
I had to back out of #GSAConnects but my VERY FIRST STUDENT is still there presenting our summer fieldwork at Newberry Volcano. 🌋🥳 Stop on by Poster 277 between 3:30-5:30 pm today to learn about what mafic enclaves can tell us about Central OR’s last eruption & where magma is beneath this caldera!!
Have you been over to Science Twitch recently? If yes, please take my survey! I'm trying to understand how effective of a platform it is for scicomm & how it may impact public attitudes & perceptions about science & scientists. Survey ends Fri 2/28 - take it at tinyurl.com/TwitchSci
In case you need a timeline cleanse, here are two GORGEOUSLY zoned feldspars for your mineralogical pleasure!!
I can’t think of anything more pleasant than burying myself in research today. May this mica cleanse your feed.
Attn Early Career Volcanologists headed to #AGU24: Get to know new colleagues, make connections, and talk volcano science this Wed evening at Busboys & Poets Art Cafe. And if you see me around AGU this week, come say hi & get a sweet sticker!
Here is a murderous yet adorable beastie. She would hug you with her claws if you will let her. ❤️
Me taking a peek at BlueSky bc it’s poppin’ but also my to-do list is holding me back:
I e got a new guest for Coffee with a Scientist this Saturday & I’m so excited for this weekend’s interview!! If you’ve ever wanted to ask a NASA Engineer questions about their job, career, or their science, then stop on by twitch.tv/volcanodoc this Saturday at 8:30 am CDT!! 🚀🌋🚀
I’m thrilled to make the long-overdue announcement that I’m headed back to the Midwest for an amazing opportunity: In just a few short weeks I start my brand new shiny position as Asst Prof of Mineralogy & Petrology at Wichita State University!!
Thank you to everyone for a great Coffee With a Scientist this morning! We learned about how cells change & why with our guest scientist Kelsey & were able to raise >$200 for Fred Hutch towards ALL research. Science Twitch has such a great community & I'm so glad to be a part of it!
#Coffee with a #Scientist is BACK for Round 2! Join me for a #charitystream where we'll learn about cell #biology & just WHAT #leukemia #research is & does - plus raise funds to support families that face #cancer every day. Saturday at 8:30 am Pacific at twitch.tv/volcanodoc
I’m giving an MCS webinar next week to a group & I thought I’d spice up my slides a little by asking Adobe’s AI what it thought of different magmatic processes:
It was an honor sharing the #TwitchCon stage with these amazing scientists & science communicators yesterday. 🛰️🐜🪐🦕🌋 Here’s to many more years of making science inclusive, judgement-free & accessible to all on this amazing platform!!
I’m embarrassed to ask this, but hey - we all gotta start somewhere. How in the heck do I cite (in-text & references) an ENTIRE monograph? Not just a few articles, but the WHOLE DAMN THING?!? I’d super appreciate any advice from more experienced researchers, bc the cat is no help!
I found my niche in SciComm with live-streaming. It’s super fun & rewarding, but a LOT of hard work, too!! AND I’m stoked to announce I’ve been invited to be a panelist for this year’s TwitchCon, where we’ll talk about science & why interactive live-streaming is such a good tool for outreach! 🌋
@earth-science.bsky.social any chance I can get added to the Earth Scientists feed, please? Here is a loaf kitty picture as payment.
I'm helping to mod the Earth & Environmental Science Jobs List (@earth_jobs on Twitter) & to expand its reach, we're branching out! Even better - no more trying to find the new list every year!! Access the Jobs List, send us an e-mail & more, here: linktr.ee/earth_jobs
