Had he resisted a fascination with magic, his reputation would stand higher than it does; even so, no one doubts his accomplishments as a navigator, a mathematician and a philosopher, even if in the end his adventures into the occult led him into the hands of the master-quack Edward Kelley, and the barren fields of alchemy and angel-raising. Dee was born at Mortlake, the son of a minor servant at the court of Henry VIII. He showed an early mathematical bent, and after a primary education at school in Chelmsford went up to St John’s, Cambridge, and there studied intensively - and also laid the foundations of his reputation as a magician by devising a flying machine for a college production of Aristophanes’ Pax so real that the audience suspected witchcraft. His major interests were mathematics and navigation, and he went on to study them at the University of Louvain. The study of navigation obviously required dexterity in mathematics, and in astronomy, and Dee claims that by the time he left Cambridge for Louvain he had already ‘taken thousands of observations of the heavenly influences and operations in this elemental portion of the world’.” — Derek Parker, A History of Astrology, London, 1983. She was accused of the murder of her first husband by witchcraft and of spectrally coming into the bedchamber of Marshal Herrick. The account of her entry into his bedchamber illustrates the sexual threat embodied by witches, particularly the threat that they posed to male authority. Bridget Bishop was also an example of the spread of the accusations outside the main purview of the small community of Salem Village. She was a woman of dubious character, living in Salem Town, who was not personally acquainted with any of the afflicted girls, nor did she have a stake in any of the ongoing conflict between the various factions in Salem Village. Instead, she was a woman who had been tried as a witch once before and who had stoked the suspicion of her neighbors for years. The use of conventional courtroom arguments, like proof by negation (‘if you don’t know what a witch is, how do you know that you are not a witch?’), illustrates that the existence of witchcraft was treated in the court system like any other common felony. a vegetable, boiled, which makes them quite
nutritious, but they were little used after the
introduction of the potato (C P Johnson). The taste is not unlike parsnips (Loewenfeld), or even salsify, so it is claimed (Kearney). There are a few medicinal uses. The American Indians, or at any rate the Ojibwe, used to soak the whole plant in warm water to make a poultice that would heal bruises (H H Smith.
1945). But there are recognized herbal remedies involving the bark and leaves, which are known to be sedative and astringent, so they have been used for gastro-intestinal disorders in particular, and also for asthma and whooping cough (Grieve. 1931). More recently, the seeds have been successfully used to treat
eczema (T Walker). On this day slave women, dressed in their
mistresses' clothes, ran about in play, scoffing at passers-by and engaging in a kind of sham fight in which they cast stones at one another. They feasted and drank under fig-tree boughs in the Plain of Mars and, along with their mistresses, cut sprays from the sacred fig tree and sacrificed them and their milky juice to Juno of the Goat. Now the fig is purgative, and such purgatives were ceremonially used by the ancients as cathartics to expel evil influences and hence to induce good. The resemblance of the sap of the fig to milk and the fact that the sacrifice, in historical times, was made to the especial goddess of mothers, make the object of the rite fairly sure. The male fig communicates its richness to the divinity who, in turn, communicates it to the women. Arborists and plant pathologists have been hard at work for nearly a century locating hardy, immune individuals for breeding programs; several resistant cultivars are available, but none have total immunity.
The ancient Greeks associated the Elm with Orpheus. In the lore of the Northern Europe, and in other parts of the continent, it is believed that the Elm tree was the ancient female ancestor of humans, along with the male Ash.
The leaves of English Elm (Ulmus procera) have been used topically to treat hemorrhoids and other noxious swellings. The virtues of Slippery Elm (Ulmus rubra), long venerated in Native American medicine, are chiefly anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and laxative. This Elm is a renowned medicament… Elm branches are occasionally employed for beating the bounds in Britain on Rogation Sunday (the fifth Sunday after Easter), for the blessing of crops and reaffirmation of land boundaries.” — Daniel A. Though the nobility and gentry could well afford their own astrologers if they wished (and many of them did wish), they also bought the annuals, just as people today buy do-it-yourself health books to read in their doctors’ waiting rooms… Their popularity was enormous, partly because they were useful (as
diaries, for instance), partly as popular entertainment. Some of them offered educational supplements on religion, medicine, magic, even sex: when the planets were in certain positions, love-making was positively
dangerous - the ‘dog days’ of July and August were especially so. One satirist suggested that this was a time of year when adultery was common, for most husbands obeyed the astrologers’ injunction to refrain from sex, and their wives turned to other quarters for satisfaction, on the grounds that ‘if husband won’t another must’. But there was positive advice, too: Walter Gray, in his notes for May 1581, simply enjoined ‘Let Venus be embraced’, while a contemporary suggested that his readers should ‘embrace Venus honestly’ in May, and ‘daintily’ in November. Take half a pound of Gaetan soap, or one of the whitest you can obtain, and cut the whole lot into flakes with a knife. Next take two and a half ounces of finely pulverized Florentine violet roots, six drachms each of sweet flag and marjoram, half an ounce of dried roses and a similar amount of cloves, a drachm of fresh coriander, one and a half drachms each of lavender flowers and bay leaves and three drachms of gum storax. Grind everything to powder and knead it together with the soap flakes. Then take ten grains each of musk and
amber, temper it with rose-water and shape soap balls out of it, which are excellent for washing the beard. If, however, you wish to wash your face with it, when you are kneading it add a small quantity, or about an ounce, of sweet almond oil. That will make it somewhat milder and make the face tender and soft and not drawn. One comes across many people who are so inquisitive and want to know how to make ordinary soap, which is in fact something which is more the business of artisans, but I have not included it here, in spite of the fact

The story of how they reached the vegetable plot is a long and sometimes confusing one. Take the globe artichoke and its
apparent sister, the Jerusalem artichoke. As for the globe artichoke, Cynara scolymus, that looks like what it is — an edible thistle. It first came into the kitchen 4,000 years ago when it was cultivated in the Middle East, in the fertile
crescent that lay between the Nile and the Indus. To the Greeks it was kardos or skolumos, to the Romans carduus, which explains why the Italians still enjoy their cariofi. One Roman painter depicted Priapus on a fresco weighing his monumental member on a set of scales against a globe artichoke, presumably a reference to the artichoke’s ancient reputation as an aphrodisiac. Open notebook with handwritten text from the post at top of the page with additional text: “The Greek Valerian (Polemonium ceruleum, Linn.) is not a Valerian at all, but belongs to the natural order Polemoniacez, the family of the Phloxes. Cats are, however, nearly as fond of the smell of this plant as of the true Valerian, and will frequently roll on it and injure it, and hence, perhaps, it has been popularly termed Valerian. It does not possess any of the medicinal qualities of the Valerians, and has nothing in common with them except in the shape of the leaves. It is a common garden plant, with showy, blue flowers, and is called ‘Jacob’s Ladder,’ from its successive pairs of leaflets. The name of the genus, Polemonium, is somewhat obscure — it is apparently derived from the Greek polemos (war), but its application is unexplained…A handsome form, frequent in gardens, has variegated leaves and white flowers. Culpepper says of it: ‘It is under Mercury, and is alexipharmic, sudorific, and cephalic, and useful in malignant fevers and pestilential distempers; it helps in nervous complaints, headaches, trembling, palpitations of the heart, vapours, etc. It is good in hysteric cases, and epilepsies have been cured by the use of this herb.’ He tells us also, ‘it is planted in gardens, and is found wild in some parts of Yorkshire.’” — M. In the 1st century AD Pliny concluded that it was so named because it came from Askalon (now Ashkelon, in S. Israel), and the attribution has remained. In truth it originated much further east, probably in C. Asia, and reached India before it came to the Mediterranean. The original Greek name has spawned the term ‘scallion’, which has been
used to mean a shallot, a spring onion (especially in the USA), or one of the small bulbs of any bunching variety of onion. Shallots can be eaten raw in salads, but their special qualities are best revealed when they are cooked. Their contribution to French cuisine, and especially to certain sauces, e.g. béarnaise, is well known; but they are of no
less importance in the Orient. They also make excellent pickles, and are much used for this purpose in SE Asia. Julie Sahni (1980) says that ‘shallot is particularly savored by those

The posy holder completes the effect for presentation. Alternatively, the flowers and foliage can be set into a wire frame
inside the bowl for a display in the house. In deciding which herbs to use - the language of flowers may be a source of inspiration for a special occasion. I often like to wander around the garden picking different stems and trying them together before coming to a final decision. At this time of year the following are particularly lovely: chamomile, eau-de-cologne mint, golden marjoram, etc. Midsummer is a magical time and traditions honouring the Solstice and power of the sun are very ancient. Christian festivals overlaid the older feasts and June 24th, St John’s day, became a favourite time to pick a protective posy. It was traditionally hung in the house to dry and kept there to drive away all manner of evil until the
next year. On this day the power of the sun is at its height and the power of the herbs, may, in truth, be strongest. The observance of St. John’s Eve, which occurs two days after the summer solstice (known in Europe as Midsummer’s Eve) was probably introduced into Louisiana by French and Spanish colonists, who would have been continuing a European tradition with both pagan and Christian roots.
Before the Christianization of Western Europe, religious festivals followed the agricultural and pastoral calendar and marked the summer and winter solstices. At these crucial times of the year, the human world and the spirit world were believed to intersect. Men and women responded by lighting bonfires to attract good spirits and drive away bad ones, protect livestock and people from disease, and ensure a successful harvest. Believers also immersed themselves in sacred springs, streams, and lakes that were supposed to be endowed with magical and medicinal virtues. Roman Catholic holy days were grafted onto Celtic and Germanic days of pagan religious observance. Women selling watercress were a common sight in 19th-century London. There was also
garden yellowrocket (Barbarea vulgaris), cuckoo flower (Cardamine pratensis), and
shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris),
these last two being types of cress also. In addition there was bishop’s goutweed
(Aegopodium podagraria), lovage (Levisticum
officinale), and the roots of British pignut or earthnut (Conopodium majus), which were dug up, boiled and peeled…lovage. I always feel affectionate towards this plant. A boyfriend of mine called Graeme once dragged his botanist aunt into the fields around Wick to find me a lovage plant as, in the late 1960s, it was virtually impossible to buy either plants or seed. It was the bouillon cube of the Middle Ages. Indeed the German company Maggi used to use it for their sauce. It gives body to soups and stews and is good in salad though use it sparingly. This is demulcent to the chest, or to the urinary passages, being also slightly laxative. Bees favour the said plants, which are rich in honey.
