No, John - the Falklanders’ fundamental right to democratic self-determination is not changed by whose football team has cleverer feet.
In two hours of really quite irritating commentary, this ground my gears the most. So pessimistic - two semi-finals in three World Cups! That’s good!
Something that she never said or advocated. Even the Guardian has acknowledged this to be false for literally decades.
I’ll be back on #thewrap on Sky News with @zoesqwilliams.bsky.social from 10pm until midnight. #skypapers
If the cost had risen by the rate of inflation it would be £134k. Where’s the extra £96k come from??
Comparing David Davis’ Haltemprice and Howden by-election in 2008 to Clacton today: how on earth has the cost of a by-election risen from £80k to £230k in 18 years?
What’s more, Ukraine just announced a new variant of its FP-1 with an even longer range. So the consequences for Russia are going to keep on flowing.
Aside from Gary Stevenson being wrong about almost everything he argues for, this is just a very bizarre way to talk about oneself.
From an Instagram thread of stories about how small children react to bereavement - absolutely superb:
You’ll never guess the motivation for the petition 🤪 FB post by the petition’s founder:
Ten years ago referendum day started early - a dawn raid in Streatham South, which was our strongest patch in Lambeth (the most Remain borough). It was pouring with rain across Remain-leaning London, which we knew was good news for differential turnout.
In 1942, 50 Squadron was part of Bomber Command (coincidentally, Arthur ‘Bomber’ Harris had commanded the squadron when it flew fighters at the end of the First World War), flying Lancasters. Bill McDonald was a gunner. www.no-50-and-no-61-squadrons-association.co.uk/veterans-alb...
I wanted to know more about Bill McDonald, given his epitaph. It seems he really did make a choice to be there fighting against Nazism in 1942: his family, to whom he wrote that letter, were out in Chile.
“Mother, I've weighed the risks - which I prefer to living in a world dominated by Nazis. Bill" Thank god for Bill and so many more like him (Pic from @profpeterdoyle.bsky.social on X)
Excitingly I am creeping ever closer to my ambition of winning the @thespectator1828.bsky.social’s weekly writing competition. Honourable mention this week! The challenge was to distil a famous poem into 4 lines. I took on Coleridge’s ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’:
Royal Marine Commandos boarding a Russian shadow tanker in the English Channel for the first time. More of this please! 🇬🇧 🇺🇦
The most wonderfully inappropriate deployment of jaunty music I think I’ve ever seen (from a history channel on Facebook).
Excited to see the lesbian witchcraft apocalypse befall the United States in a couple of days’ time.
So-called “patriot” celebrating the thug government of a hostile dictatorship that has attacked our country and murdered Brits on British streets, and the “civilised society” that slaughters Ukrainians.
