YES… HA HA HA… YES

The sickos meme showing an image of a intense-looking man with a shirt labelled “SICKOS” standing in a building looking out of a large multi-paned window and laughing while saying “YES… HA HA HA… YES” except that in this instance Yakumo Yukari from Touhou Project (in her standard white and purple attire although the word SICKOS is emblazoned across the chest of her top) takes the place of the sickos guy. Also the usual words are omitted in the image, hence my including them as part of my post.

Okay, one more. An obscure tile-matching game originally developed for the Dreamcast in the noughties but given a free Windows port in 2011 or so by the name of Wind and Water Puzzle Battles. Although the developers, Yuan Works, haven’t updated their site in some time, it’s still available.

The screenshot displays a single-player game of W&W Puzzle Battles with a rectangular playing area in the middle of the screen into which rectangular tiles of five varieties (coded by colour and labelled with different Chinese characters) representing the Chinese elements scroll from above. You match blocks of the same element type in diamonds of four blocks by rotating diamonds of blocks clockwise or anti-clockwise causing them and any contiguous blocks of the same element to vanish and other blocks to fall from above and take their place. Do this quickly enough and form long enough chains of a single element and you can accrue lots of points and prevent the playing area being constructed from the bottom by the black press visible in the screenshot. The shot also shows a largely decorative player character, a pretty background of foggy mountains and trees, and various indicators giving current score, difficulty level, press speed, and other relevant info, outside the playing area.

And don’t get me started on visual novels, which I love but are little known in the Anglosphere. There are a few famous ones, but many obscure gems. I’m kinda obsessed with the Narcissu VNs which tell the (fictional) stories of disabled and terminally-ill young adults in a quite affecting way.

I tend to love indie games or games in genres that aren’t very popular (at least in this time and place), so lots of my most cherished games seem fairly little known. But how about the Deadly Rooms of Death series? I basically never see it mentioned anywhere. But it’s SO good.
