Fascism is a deformity of capitalism. It heightens the imperialist tendency towards domination which is inherent in capitalism, and it safeguards the principle of private property.
At the same time, fascism immeasurably strengthens the institutional racism already bred by capitalism, whether it be against Jews (as in Hitler's case) or against African peoples (as in the ideology of Portugal's Salazar and the leaders of South Africa).
Fascism reverses the political gains of the bourgeois democratic system such as free elections, equality before the law, and par-liaments; it also extolls authoritarianism and the reactionary union of the church with the state. In Portugal and Spain, it was the Catholic church—in South Africa, it was the Dutch Reformed church.

I enjoyed this production of “Turandot.” The singers are incredible. They’re also doing performances next weekend. The show itself is a little problematic. PoP moderates that and gives a history lesson in the program.

Poets, playwrights, and composers have now interpreted and adapted this story into many different languages, through many different time periods, and cultural lenses. The oldest rendition of Turandot was in Farsi from 12th century Persia; it then resurfaced in French in 1722, only to be turned into a play in Italian in 1762, and then further romanticised into a separate play in German in 1801. The name Turandokht was first introduced in the French story, Les Mille et un jours, and the setting of Peking (modern-day Beijing) was first used in the Italian play, Turandot instead of its historical setting of Persia. The Chinese setting was continued in Schiller's adaptation in German, and was how Puccini first experienced the play before adapting it into an opera. Puccini's librettists Adami and Simoni continued to set the story in China.
By setting the story in Peking, China, these Western storytellers used limited ideas of a faraway land they had never experienced and combined these ideas with Italian operatic traditions to create a fantastical love story. Puccini took the creative liberty to commission a set of custom-tuned gongs for Turandot after he made the same choice for his earlier opera, Madama Butterfly.
A Chinese folk song "Mo-Li-Hua" is used throughout the opera, taken from a songbox Puccini was given by Italian diplomats. Taking from Italian theatre, Puccini was likely inspired by commedia dellarte clowns as the source of inspiration for Ping, Pang, and Pong.
Times have changed and the social awareness of audiences has adjusted to the world around them. When setting a production of Turandot in China, many current audiences look at the characters of Ping, Pang, and Pong and find these comedic characters offensive for being caricatures mocking Chinese people through stereotypes. For an Italian composer to lift a folk song or not collaborate with experts in traditional instrumentation for a modern composition these days would not fly!

Testing the limits of the paper in this sketchbook/notebook with a mix of gel ink, pigment ink and a broad nib dip pen, and some watercolor paint. This paper does not handle wet media especially well.

This is a much more accurate way to understand the Rwandan genocide. I might need to read or re-read some things. (Yes, I know about Gourevitch’s book on the subject.)
