With Argentina set to play England tonight in the World Cup, we have seen people trying to highlight the links between Cymru and Argentina that entirely whitewash the history. This is a theme not only in sports but also deeply pervasive in our education and our national movement.

LIBERAL LIES

There is an idea amongst a large part of the Welsh public that Patagonia is the place where Welsh people lived in harmony with native communities, having fled persecution at home and been invited to Patagonia to settle. This is a falsehood.

Liberal media paints a portrait of camaraderie between the Welsh settlers and the native Tehuelche population. We are told that Y Wladfa, despite meaning the colony, was not a colonial project, but rather a settlement. A settlement on an “empty” land of desert, in the middle of Patagonia, acquired not by force but legally. This narrative completely undermines the influence this settlement had on the genocide of the Tehuelche people and that the Welsh settlers were merely innocent bystanders.

A Troubled Past

The act of settling isn’t neutral. Welsh liberal media justifies the settlement of the land by arguing that the land was uninhabited. The land was uninhabited in the same manor that some Palestinian land was uninhabited until Zionists settled.

The influence of a foreign language, religion and culture acts as an oppressive force. When the Argentine and Chilean colonial government began the conquest of the desert i.e the genocide and enslavement of the native Patagonians, Welsh settlers responded with a ‘strongly written letter’, with only very few individuals coming to the aid of the native Tehuelche people.

Y Wladfa was the first successful European settlement in Patagonia, acting as a template and justification for further Argentine atrocities. The material interests of the Welsh settlers were fundamentally to pacify the genocide of the natives. Y Wladfa is championed as a story of Welsh tenacity and victory in the face of English oppression. Whilst completely ignoring the involvement in settling on a land, which played a part in the erasure of the language and culture of another people.

Attempted Revisionism

T Michael D Jones, the founder of Y Wladfa, a man of great authority, in the modern lens, he may be considered a member of the crachach. He had previous experience in advancing settler colonial movements with his time working as a congregationalist minister in Ohio. In his search for a potential “little Wales beyond Wales”, he was aware of the native population of Patagonia and had described them as “anwariaid” - savages.

It is therefore clear that the settlers on board the Mimosa on their way to the Chubut valley had no intention of integrating with the broader native Patagonian population. Eisteddfodau have been a regular event in Y wladfa since 1865, and almost every year in the Eisteddfod genedlaethol, a Patagonian tent is propped up.

Rugby games between Cymru and Argentina display flags of Y Wladychfa Gymreig, and S4C broadcasts documentaries, revising the history of what took place.

It’s long past time we acknowledge and condemn the settlement that took place. We must not allow our troubled history taint our future.

Our members were out doing community rebuilding work in the valleys this weekend: clearing away rubble, handing out free water and talking to locals.

REMEMBER OUR PATRIOT DEAD Yesterday, members of the Welsh Underground Network and @PGCCymru travelled to Abergele to commemorate the lives of George Taylor and Alwyn Jones, two men who sadly lost their lives defending the rights of the Welsh nation to dignity and respect.... (1/3)

Just under two years ago, Keir Starmer began writing his legacy as Prime Minister. All he's managed to conjure up in that time is a continuation of austerity, pathetic pandering to bigotry, and projecting his allegiance to the richest, and most powerful forces in the world.

On this day in 1913, Suffragette and socialist Emily Davison died of injuries she sustained while protesting for women's right to vote. MARXIST MONDAY!

On this day in 1913, Emily Davison died of injuries she sustained while protesting for women’s right to vote. Davison was a militant member of the Women’s Social and Political Union, and she was also a socialist.

As an active suffragette Davison was arrested nine times, and during her hunger strikes she was regularly force-fed. She disrupted liberal rallies, threw stones at liberal politicians and set fire to post-boxes. She is also believed to have been responsible for a bombing that destroyed Chancellor Lloyd George’s house.

Over 55,000 people attended Davison’s funeral, and she has become a martyr for the women’s movement."

A couple of our members made their way into The Valleys to check up on and maintain our vegetable plants; snacking on the fresh pea pods as we de-weeded the soon to be flowering cabbages. Over the next few weeks, we expect to see carrots, onions, and tomatoes begin to show.

A rise in transgender acceptance has triggered reactionary moral panics. UK hate groups, funded by various American Conservative Christian foundations and amplified by reactionary print media, have used anti-trans arguments as weapons to try and break apart progressive coalitions and roll back LGBTQ+ rights.

Labour are under immense pressure, both from anti-trans hate groups and from the trans community. Following their reactionary inclinations, they have chosen to “resolve” the matter by segregating trans people “with dignity and respect”.

This will prove to be no resolution at all. Let us show Labour the anger and defiance this “guidance” has awoken, and make them regret ever issuing it. Stand up for our trans comrades!

We wholeheartedly condemn the new anti-trans guidance this government have produced, and send unequivocal solidarity to our trans comrades & neighbours. We call on everyone, trans and cis, to defy this attempt to segregate trans people out of public life. 1/2

The government have published their latest attack on the trans community. What is being proposed has been weakened by the efforts of many progressive groups, but is still fundamentally an attempt to segregate trans people out of public spaces.

This is the product of an organised hate movement. It must be resisted. We call on everyone, trans and cis, to defy this guidance any way they can and to agitate against it.

As ever, we send unequivocal support and solidarity to our trans comrades & neighbours.

The guidance refers to cis women and cis men as “biological women” and “biological men”. This degrades trans people by treating them as “fake women” and “fake men”, and wilfully ignores the biological changes many trans people undergo during transition.

It totally ignores intersex people, assuming that everyone is neatly born male or female and that that “birth sex”, is the most relevant factor in

It treats the presence of trans people in public spaces as potential discrimination against cis people, and argues that the removal of trans people from those spaces can be a reasonable step.

It allows venues to relegate trans people to gender neutral facilities only, treating them as a de-facto “third sex”, as second-class citizens.

Dedicated trans organisations have already been posting detailed overviews of the guidance and its implications. We suggest reading those statements after this one.

Fantastic journalistic and mutual aid work is already being done in the trans community, and that is a strong foundation for the wider progressive movement to build upon when opposing this anti-trans guidance.

Cis people must pull their weight and follow the lead of their trans peers. When a vulnerable section of the working class comes under attack, it is the responsibility of the rest of the class to rally around and defend them.

Capitalism has since its beginning relied on strict enforcement of gender roles and gendered labour. As science and conditions have advanced, and new innovations have given queer communities new language and ideas to organise around, the capitalist gender order faces new challenges.

To defend itself and adapt to this change, the capitalist system has tried to assimilate the more “acceptable” aspects of the LGBTQ+ movement, while continuing intense persecution of the less “marketable” and more “radical” aspects.

The result is a growing trans underclass, relegated to the sections of the sevice industries with the worst conditions, doing traditionally “feminine” labour. Trans women in particular are one of the worst paid and most under-employed demographics in the whole of Europe.
