On Overdose Awareness Day, I’ll be launching a new publication on drug science and harm reduction. What’s It Like? will deliver the nuance, detailed data analysis and human texture that I usually have to leave on the cutting room floor as a journalist. Here’s a preview. Sign up: whatsitlike.me
Landing in Chicago from Rio by way of Bogota. A beautiful way to end the 15 hour plane journey was seeing these fireworks off Navy Pier in my home city.
Do not trust any reporting from The New York Times about anything vaguely related to science. They blatantly manipulate data. The one statistic about AI’s environmental impact in this op-ed, screenshotted here, has absolutely nothing to do with the impact a data center would have on your town.
Lol the clearly AI generated image in this ad by lawyers going after AI companies for stealing intellectual property.
The can never make us forget the true, authentic version of The Odyssey… The Wishbone version.
Seen at The Logan Square Arts Fest. Three little dogs wait for their human who is in the porta potty. #Chicago
Really getting annoying how people (including neurodivergent ones) are talking about these conditions like they’re mostly about aesthetics and vibes.
I’m gonna go ahead and post her entire reply, because I’ve never seen anything quite like it…
The bots themselves are actually less likely to agree with the idea they might be conscious than certain Silicon Valley execs… You can ask them.
It is very hard to make someone who doesn’t have ADHD understand how impairing it is because the things we struggle with happen to everyone from time to time. The number of times each week I wish I could rewind 30 seconds and undo a careless mistake is a lot. For example, just now..
During a lightning storm, it can be so relaxing to turn off all the lights and open all the curtains. #Chicago
Seafood City, an international Filipino grocery chain, brought its late night dance party to Chicago for the first time over the weekend. It was a blast. And it’s in the Tribune!
Came home to find this ad for a conceal and carry class taped to the door of my building in my very blue neighborhood in my very blue city. #chicago
TrumpRx works kind of like GoodRx (but with way fewer discounted medications.) Here’s an example of one of the coupons. Sort of reminds me of Disney Dollars.
Yoko Ono invited visitors to her current MCA exhibit in Chicago to share notes about their mothers. I was amazed to see that so many people had expressed such complex feelings on the spot. Here are some of them.
The woman who filmed Alex Pretti’s murder—clearly a key witness— has not been contacted by the FBI or the Department of Homeland Security for their investigations. HT @onsitepublicmedia.bsky.social
You can also use the map to look at when overdose trends cross state lines and when they don’t. Check out the stark district between San Bernardino County, CA and bordering Clark County, NV (where Vegas is.) In San Bernardino overdose deaths are down 18%, in Clark they’re up 15%.
One of the coolest things about this investigation is this interactive that lets you see how overdoses fatality rates have changed in your county, and how they compare with the rest of your state. Here's Dane County, WI, where I'm from. (Thanks to Andrew Witherspoon for putting this together!)
What the actual fuck with these FAFSA form race categories. How do they decide who gets to check a box and who has to type out their country of origin?
“They invented coca cola. They invented cocaine. They created a monster.” Juan David Piñacue on how the United States corrupted the coca plant, and his mission to reclaim it for the Indigenous Andean community.
