Public Bathrooms
Everyone needs a place to pee! A huge expansion in public restroom access will help address city sanitation and community engagement.

We can start this tomorrow without building a single new toilet. I cannot tell you the number of times I drove to a local park to use the restroom between patient home visits, only to find the toilet “closed for the season.” Let's start with paying city janitorial staff a living wage to keep park restrooms clean and open 365 days a year. We can also incentivize local businesses to open their restrooms to non-paying customers by funneling some of the city's sanitation budget their way. Longer term, we need to look into expanding the Portland Loo city-wide.

If you're familiar with DSA debates about how to relate to the Democratic party, it's interesting to see Zohran's framing here. Especially considering a few years ago he was sponsoring proposals for DSA candidates to downplay their Democratic affiliation

Four rules.

If they do not get the NYC-DSA endorsement, they will pledge not to run in the district if NYC-DSA endorses another candidate in that race.

If they do get the NYC-DSA endorsement, they will downplay their identification as a Democrat as much as possible. Campaigns should try to avoid writing “Democrat for…” on literature, for example. Instead, they might put on their campaign literature something like “Vote in the Democratic Primary on [insert date]” (so that it is clear they are running in the Democratic primary).

I've recently been thinking about Portland's lack of queer areas and whether that's a good or bad thing. This isn't the most encouraging though.

The Pink Light District isn’t the city’s newest gay enclave; in fact, the businesses on the block aren’t specifically queer-owned or explicitely designed for an LGBTQ audience. But organizers are keen to embrace the area’s history as a queer neighborhood, and plan to show off their work at a block party at this year’s Portland Pride.

Moda Center has a legacy of sustainability, becoming the NBA’s first existing LEED Platinum
arena in 2019. The renovation presents a unique opportunity to go even further, establishing
Portland as a global leader in sustainability with a new standard for environmental investments
in venues and great job creation.
By modernizing our existing arena rather than building new and upgrading systems with state-
of-the-art green technology, we will be able to maximize our carbon-reduction impact. This is
likely to include investments in upgrading outdated and complex lighting systems and controls,
the building’s HVAC systems, along with an exploration of more innovative building automation,
backup energy, solar PV, and demand response systems to ensure the renovated facility provides
maximum value to our local grid while minimizing its carbon footprint. This is in addition to the
embodied carbon savings we can realize by renovating vs. building new. Additionally, the City
would work closely with Rip City Management and their contractors to ensure construction jobs
meet community-established standards that ensure real and tangible community benefits.

I spend a lot of time worrying about our DSA field game here in Portland and how to make it better. However, I can rest easy knowing that the Dem establishment hasn't even started thinking seriously about theirs.
