I've completed the first on-paper copyedit of my forthcoming novella 11 bookmarks. This is from the first page:

The following text on the page of book being held open: It was not just the color or the fact that something useful for something else had been sacrificed to create the bookmark, that annoyed Grant, but also the fact it had been left in the book. He always leafs through his books before returning them. It was, for him, a sort of civic duty like carrying out your trash with you after wilderness backpacking. A burden one removes from the librarians or the next patron who checks out the title.

There are editor's marks to remove the comma after bookmark, reverse backpacking and wilderness and insert 'in the' between them and to change the word 'title' to 'book'

I know I sound like an old GenX dude going on about the third spaces we used to have. Butthe point is: these didn’t just disappear without intentional political and economic decisions to remove/deflate them. This is what teens and unhoused people face everywhere now:

He yearned to raise SF into mainstream respectability, and to this end, he published several genre titles of high literary quality: Gene Wolfe’s The Book of the New Sun (1980–83, 1987), Michael Bishop’s No Enemy but Time (1982), John M. Ford’s The Dragon Waiting (1983). But despite several novels winning major awards, including a National Book Award in 1983 for Lisa Golden’s The Red Magician, Hartwell’s imprint failed disastrously on the commercial level. In June 1983, he was fired, and Pocket replaced Timescape with Baen Books, a much more adventure-oriented SF line.

I did doomscroll this morning but then decided to dip out and use another two tickets. Those were for Columbus, which I enjoyed but not as much as I thought I would. It's gorgeous, but I think the ending is supposed to be heartfelt whereas it feels more like a horror film to me.

Wait. I think I haven’t read it and this is describing the book that I did read:
