Back in Ponte Vedra (hometown of my Nats fav Jacob Young) for the next week and first thing’s first some collard greens and cornbread.
Packing to spend some time with my folks and half the luggage is simply a 1400 page book covering the early history of NYC because it’ll make them laugh and/or lecture me (as I’m not middle-aged) if they notice and they could use the distraction.
I do think it’s weird to see people on here having bicentennial tall ship nostalgia who seem totally unaware that that is still happening this year. As in, right now. That’s how I spent my weekend. Negative attention economy I guess but it’s sad that people are missing out who might enjoy it!
Glad the weather held up for a great day in Baltimore. Managed to get on the Colombian, Uruguayan, French and German tall ships.
Well, I enjoyed the views and the corned beef sandwich anyway. It’s a travesty not to have a live organist though.
Believe it or not, despite going to so many home games, this is my first time traveling to see the Nats. But Orioles were having their Pride game against them and I wanted to see some of the tall ships, so couldn’t pass it up.
Ok Nats. Had to defend you to all my Philly family this morning and you did make that easy. So let’s get a win tonight.
Glad I was seated in time to see Bruce the Bat Dog. Hopefully we beat the Phillies so I don’t have to hear it from my Philly relatives.
Germany wins, Pride Parade, WWI aviation exhibit, dancing to Juno-winning electronic music artist…ideal afternoon/evening (and somehow I have to get myself to Othello tomorrow). But life rocks and so does DC.
The good news: I didn’t spill any vegan nachos into my scorebook and the weather was perfect. The bad news: Nationals hitting power is tied, Sampson-like, to Curtis Mead’s socks being visible.
I have never owned any of the copious Maryland flag apparel available here but if I keep accidentally walking by voting centers in DC I may need to purchase something to let the never ending row of electioneers know I am not eligible to vote in the District. Also, good birding this morning.
I am a longtime fan of Die Mannschaft dating back to living in Germany during the 1998 World Cup but going to represent for my favorite host nation as well. I’ve got Ecuadorian family but they’re in a group with Germany. Any team with a former/current Liverpool player always gets a cheer.
Spent the afternoon learning the basics of Pahari drawing for free at the NMAA with a group of interesting people. Now the proud owner of a squirrel hair brush.
Blocking so many people on this app today. Here’s a blue gray gnatcatcher as a timeline cleanse.
Hadn’t been birding in a couple of days. Missed the trees. Catbirds are abundant and loud.
Did the Spirit/Nats double header and got to be a couple feet from Lauren Betts so truly maximized my DC sports experience today.
Bruce from the cheap seats in the rain. Had an amazing time despite being seated next to the most boring people imaginable. Boomer dudes behind me scream/singing the lyrics along with me made up for it though. Voice gone.
Saw blackpoll, magnolia, and northern yellow warblers. Not bad for an afternoon walk.
I hate Paramount+ so much. It streams on my TV with the quality of a broadcast from 1998. That said, let’s go green blobs that I assume are the Washington Spirit.
Got to see batting practice for the first time. Players are taller up close and there’s more spitting than I ever want to see again. 2/3 people in this picture hit a home run in the Nats game, so really I am in some way responsible for the win by nodding encouragingly at them.
Mets and Nats conspiring to make it a rough week for me. 12 innings and counting.
Made it to the Mary Beard talk after being up till 3 am in my 40s the night before. Please clap.
