ACT Party leader David Seymour has attacked the Green's proposed new taxes, saying it fed into a culture that opposed success.
"The Green Party, in my view, have shown a real evil in their message, that New Zealand's problems are that other people have succeeded, and if you vote for them, they will take people's money and give it to you," he said.

The newly introduced Conservation Amendment Bill is a direct, calculated attack on New Zealand's wilderness. It is a radical legislative rewrite designed to hand the keys of our conservation estate over to private industry.
First, the Bill opens up roughly 60% of our public conservation land (five million hectares of forests, mountains, and coastlines) making it eligible for land swaps, disposal, or outright sale if the government decides it's "surplus" or wants to clear a path for big business.
Second, they quietly went behind the public's back. After official consultations closed, Cabinet ordered a rewrite of Section 6 of the Conservation Act. They are fundamentally altering DOC's DNA.
Instead of prioritising preservation, the law will now legally mandate DOC to "recognise economic opportunities" and enable commercial exploitation to the "greatest extent practicable." They even admitted in official documents that the main goal of this rewrite was to stop environmental groups and iwi from being able to legally challenge them in court.
To push this through, they've gutted DOC from the inside. Massive budget cuts have axed hundreds of regional support roles. Frontline rangers are being completely buried under administrative tasks.
They are trapped behind desks doing paperwork instead of being out in the bush maintaining tracks, repairing huts, and keeping our native species from going extinct.
This is the largest rollback of environmental protections New Zealand has seen in nearly 40 years. They are commercialising our national identity to make a quick buck, and they thought we'd be too distracted to notice.
The Bill has passed its first reading. The Select Committee and parallel DOC consultations are open right now, and the absolute deadline to stand up and fight this is July 9, 2026.
These are OUR lands, our children's lands, our mokopuna's lands.
They belong to the people of Aotearoa. Keep our wild places wild.

I’m of the firm belief that making action on sexual violence (something well within the government’s power to act on now in multiple different ways) contingent on a successful re-election campaign is itself a form of violence.

A few thoughts on what we might like to consider worthy of creating policy for in New Zealand:
• Mãori and Pasifika women now earn on average about 25 percent less than Päkehã men.
• In 2021, it was reported that 200 sexual assault cases each month were waiting to be assigned to an investigator.
• In 2021 more than half of the people who reported sexual assaults were children and young people when they were assaulted.
• Most who reported were female. 20% reported more than one assault.
• One in three New Zealand women have experienced physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence in their lifetime.
• Over 90% of sexual violence is not reported to police. Where it is reported, the majority of reports do not progress through the criminal justice system to conviction.
• In 2023, the advice was that sexual violence victimisations that did progress are taking longer to get through the court, with an increase in cases spending over two years enduring the process.
• Half of people charged with non-fatal strangulation or suffocation escape conviction in New Zealand. This is inexplicable given manual strangulation is the biggest sign domestic abuse will turn deadly.
• 54.8% of reports to Netsafe are from women and 5.4% from gender diverse people.
• 1 in 3 women are at risk of developing poor mental health.
• Older women (those aged 55 and over) are the fastest growing cohort of homeless
Australians. It's a similar stark picture for New Zealand.
The Ministry for Women estimates women earn nearly $900,000 less than men over a lifetime.
• In terms of detected sexual violence, there were 18,371 sexual assault (and related offences) proceedings by New Zealand Police from 2014 to 2024 (New Zealand Police,
2024), those perpetrating were mainly male (97.1%).
