Edward checked the time, and he thought he would take a quick trip through town just to have a look. The Harbour Bridge was undergoing its annual reconstruction phase, expected to last, as always, until fall. Potholes were as plentiful as pigeons, and still, not much had changed. Driving the old streets past many fond and some unpleasant memories until he came to where everything ended, Fernhill Cemetery.

Slowly past the stones of fallen heroes and forgotten families until just past the gazebo, to where a small plaque marked the final resting place of Edward’s parents. As Edward walked up, he paused to see if there was a place for him, since Patricia had ensured there would be no place for him beside his son.

Max had done his best to remodel the master bedroom to accommodate his own furniture and remove some of the images burned into his brain before he learned to knock before entering.
The closet was empty except for Edwards day bag. An extra shirt, shaving kit and the necessary toiletries in case of emergencies. Hoping for at least an extra tube of toothpaste, Max was happy to find Tylenol, dental floss, toothpaste, and a charger for a Nokia cellphone.
Is if he received a slap in the back of his head, Max remembered the Nokia from the hotel and the calls from the stranger who alerted him to the ambush.
“Didn’t Edward want to use a Nokia for the trackers?” The question raced through Max’s mind as he searched for the phone.

It was mid-afternoon, and LeDouc was slouched across his couch as he had been for the last two days. The call from Godbout had shown him how bad things had become. He had lost control, and now Godbout thinks he is giving the orders. How the hell did things go so wrong so fast?

He was sure that he wasn’t exposed, but everything he had was tied up in this new deal. If only he could put that money to use. Only he told everyone that he couldn’t find it. That somehow it just vanished. It made him a laughing stock. The man who lost a quarter of a million in cash. What a joke. He was sure that he knew where it was, but it might as well have been on the moon.

Cleaned-up and changed, the two returned to the lobby to find a group of Ranger fans in an animated discussion with a group of Montreal fans that seemed to follow them out of the hotel. Godbout arrived on-time in a mildly customized 4x4 Toyota, which seemed to add weight to Edward’s theory.

Beyond this, neither Edward nor Max was taking any notice of anything else but the spectacle, which is playoff hockey in the quintessential home of the game. While the hardcore might say that Le Centre Bell is not, nor will it ever be, the Forum, knowing that of the 21,000 people in the building that night, Max and Edward would have the best seats in the house.

Bernie pushed send before he could change his mind, and spent the next ten minutes trying to figure out how to go back in time and unsend it. As he sat there trying to console himself, he heard footsteps on the stairs followed by a knock on his door.
A heavyset man in a tie and overcoat stood in the hallway as if he expected to be viewed through the peephole. Cautiously opening the door, Bernie tried his best to be calm.
“Hello, but I don’t need to hear the word of Jesus today.”
Edward chuckled for a moment before he showed his badge.
“That’s original. I’m Detective Edward Kewitt with the Fredericton Police, and I was wondering if you could answer a couple of questions about a ‘68 Chevy Caprice?”

“I sure do.” Perkins beamed as he offered Edward the keys to examine.
“So, let me make sure that I have everything.
“You trespassed on private property, removed a set of keys to a vehicle valued at more than $5000, fraudulently represented yourself as an employee of the Storage facility to gain access to a unit that you plan on breaking into, so you can determine if those contents are of any value. Correct?”
Perkins grew red in the face, knowing that he walked into a trap with his arms open. He still was unable to speak as Edward continued.
“In light of everything you have just told me, I am going to hang onto these and determine through legal channels if anything is going on with that car and its current owner. I believe that you won’t be talking about this to anyone while we continue the investigation.”
“That’s friggin blackmail, you bastard!”
“No, it’s not. If you start talking, all of these people disappear, and we have nothing except for the fact that you have these keys. Does that make it clear?”
“Yeah, very.”
Edward smiled as he distinctly heard Perkins quietly refer to him as a bastard again as he left.

The leaves would have obscured the sniper’s blind the day they raided the farm. From there, the occupant could have seen the entire farm. From the house to the barn and down into the valley below, and the border.
Not far off, another stand in another maple would have surveyed everything else back down towards the road and up to the barn.

Marissa had found a strength in Edward that was not just inspiring but contagious. During those days, there was no worry, no doubt, something that carried her forward.

Some would say a woman is ageless, not Edward, for he found Marissa to be all ages: her youthful laugh, the respect of maturity, teenage playfulness, and a childlike passion to explore.

A couple of decades later, Edward finds out he has pancreatic cancer with a year to live. A week after that, he meets a woman, falls in love, but she is probably the other nurse you already know everything about.”
