like this is the berliner tsc, which is a german federal weightlifting training centre. i've had the privilege to train here a handful of times and it's always wonderful.

berliner tsc weightlifting gym. from this angle, there are four lifting platforms sunk into the floor, each with lightly-loaded barbells resting on them. not visible is the other side of the gym, which has several more platforms.

I'm very, very tired of seemingly well-meaning thinkpieces decrying the use of "genai" for images, writing, music, and other artistic mediums in their entirety, yet choosing to portion off generating source code as a distinct use case that is grudgingly acceptable.

As the slop crisis expands, I constantly observe writers wringing their hands over what slop is doing to their own preferred medium while in the same breath explaining that using slop for the cover images on their books is mere expediency; a victimless crime. I see visual artists complain that their personal style is flattened and crudely imitated by image models, making it harder to take on commissions, while stating that they don't mind listening to slop music while they work. I hear musicians express extreme frustration at how slop music has flooded the marketplaces they use, but that LLMs are very handy for polishing their emails and writing their memoir. Video game developers variously describe some subset of 3d modeling, texturing, voice acting, writing, translation, animation, level design, or programming as essential to the integrity of their projects while handwaving the rest as interchangeable means to an end. All of these people think that slop is a pox upon the endeavors they currently value, but far too many find it acceptable for things that are secondary or tertiary in their lives.

Every flavor of slop is built from models that were made with precisely the same kind of contempt for the millions of humans who contributed to their training corpus. Every type of "genai" on the market today strips away authorship, context, and intent from creative work- including source code generators, even the cute tiny models that can be run locally.

I have spent my programming career benefiting handsomely from the rich commons of open-source codebases and their surrounding communities, and I have chosen in turn to make the vast majority…
