Just this week, just in the US, we've seen massive fires, a vicious heat dome, treacherous surf, and flooding effecting millions. And there's a lot more to come as El Niño grows. We've now sent more than 4,400 letters urging Governors and state leaders to prepare. Send a letter: elninowarning.com

But the scale and threat of this coming warming event is simply too large to ignore in the name of business/politics as usual.

States, cities, and counties should be immediately:

- reinforcing river banks and lakes against all time high cresting numbers
- increasing funding for fire fighting and rescue
- running geological tests on populated hillsides
- bolstering power grids
- building more tornado shelters, cooling and high ground centers
- increasing life guards and warning systems for beaches
- informing citizens of potentially life threatening increased risk

Instead the signatories of this cry for action see mostly silence and inaction.

In some places, Big Oil is now murdering more people than all other murders combined. The question is: Will prosecutors keep letting them get away with it.

Finally, there’s involuntary manslaughter – the crime of recklessly causing (or, in many states, substantially contributing to) the death of another person. Clearly, climate-caused deaths are accelerating – a recent analysis found that extreme heat from climate change may have caused more than 20,000 deaths in Europe last month alone. Already, there are victims and survivors who are connecting the dots to big oil. Earlier this month, a Washington state court ruled that a lawsuit against the fossil fuel industry for the wrongful death of the plaintiff’s mother in a climate-induced heatwave will proceed toward discovery and trial. Prosecutors could follow suit and begin charging big oil companies in relation to the climate disasters that are, in some instances, taking the lives of more of their constituents than are being lost to traditional homicides.

In fact, the story that somehow has not become standard is that climate scientists pulled off something that was extraordinary in intellectual terms. They got the basic outlines of what was coming and in many ways even the numbers on what was coming right decades in advance. In any kind of rational world we would be hailing them as heroes and very much listening to them about what we should be doing now.

Of course where we are is that climate scientists are reviled.

Probably just for the Christmas card list... A shady, Big-Oil backed effort is "collecting hundred of emails and other documents" to smear and intimidate the 15 scientists conducting a report that could expose the damage cost of fossil fuel pollution in *individual* extreme weather catastrophes.

The scientific strides stand to send shock waves through the energy sector. The studies are sporadically being used to help build climate liability cases against oil and gas companies. But lawyers, scientists and insurers expect them to increasingly appear in court filings.

The commercial stakes are enormous. A 2022 analysis from a financial industry forum found that fossil fuel companies could face cumulative losses of “over $100 billion in the most severe litigation outcome,” citing data from the consulting company Verisk Analytics. Since then, more than a dozen new climate liability cases have been filed, including one lawsuit that is seeking more than $51.5 billion in compensation related to a deadly heat wave.

Fossil fuels account for about 75% of all heat-trapping pollution. Agriculture and land use changes are most of the other 25%. About 15-20% is just from meat and dairy (land use for grazing, land use and pollution for growing feed, methane released by the animals.) These are just the facts 🤷‍♂️.

Case in point: Even Pew apparently does not understand that "environmentally friendly" behaviors should focus on cutting heat trapping pollution, eg: Electrification/switching to clean energy, using less plastic, eating plant-based, and supporting elected leaders who will use laws to cut pollution.
