To the reformers the flaw in that reasoning was obvious. Stevenson was a two-time loser. Humphrey had been nominated-and lost. The Old Politics had failed in what it claimed it was best at-giving the public what it wanted. Surely that was a mandate for change-as was the charnel house in Vietnam. They insisted it was reformers who knew what the public wanted now.
