Part 2 of my Kimekomi doll post! Info in the Alts. #dollsky

These are kinda hybrid kimekomi dolls.
Those with a lot of gofun (oyster shell composition) are called gosho dolls. The one on the left is really old and was purchased off Sensei. Guesstimate Meiji? (I do have dolls that old) He's in really good shape and even has some painting on his outfit.
The middle one I made.
Only the center is kimekomi and the wife picked him out for me since I do enjoy a good Sumo Basho.
The one on the right was gifted to me. He's full body gofun and the true gosho in the collection. His hand is damaged though.

A duo of Noh theater dolls and a Sanbaso dancer in the center.
Noh theater is older than Kabuki and performances can last literal days. These are vintage kimekomi dolls and thinking that these are probably pre WWII. They're in great condition!
The center one is a Sanbaso dancer. Shinto. This one was a restoration project that I took on and even redid the hat. His gofun hand and brass bells that he was holding were completely unsaveable so the hand ended up getting replaced. It was my second restoration job and Sensei kinda quietly gave me her blessings to tackle projects like this going forward.

These are 3 dolls that I made. The one on the left was a vintage kit with that crazy 70's fabric. The center doll was my very first kit, and it looks like it. 😅
The one on the far right was special: it was an unfinished kit that belonged to Sensei's mother that I finished. The main goal of kimekomi dolls is to drape the fabric so that it looks like one continual piece and not piecemeal. It's harder than it sounds! Since this doll didn't have any fabric, I chose this one.

One of the last dolls that I made. This little one had been gifted to several people who all turned her down. This shows the fabric flow and you can see that the wood preparation is very important to the finished doll here.

Greetings #dollsky! I finally got my head together enough to post about my Japanese kimekomi dolls! Tons of info in the alts as usual.

This is an unfinished kimekomi doll kit that's been sitting around forever from the zodiac Year of the Rat. As you can see, it's really rough. The Pic on the left shows you the finished product. There's lots of cording, and also a good deal of fabric. It comes with a chop, which has the name of the doll.

Very rough.
So what is a kimekomi doll?
These are hollow molded shapes made of paulownia wood, which is sanded in 3 separate applications: 150 grit, 220 grit and I believe 400 grit sandpaper. There's a ton of preparation and everything has to be smooth for the fabric. There's wood putty that's made of the special fabric glue, paulownia wood dust, and oddly jute fiber (natural twine material). Every imperfection has to be dealt with or it will show up in the final doll. I learned patience here, and what not to do. Someone took a mini electric sander to one and ended up with an expensive mistake...there's only so much you can take off...

These are some small animal dolls that I made! The Year of the Boar and Tiger dolls I initially made for the Sakura Matsuri that's part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC every year. I liked these so much that I bought these extra kits so that I could make them. The fabric has to be lined up just so. The goldfish was an early project and my first dealings with delicate silks and patterned Shibori fabric.

This Hina set was something that the wife got me as an anniversary gift and is an even sorer topic to me than Ghoulia Yelps. I didn't make this set, it came to me via ebay. It had a magnificent case...that did not arrive intact. When I got it and heard broken glass, of course it wasn't going to be good. I opened the box, and the packing material for the set was basically a few balls of newspaper and some handfuls of Polyfil. Oh you KNOW that they heard about it. The dolls below will get talked about separately.
