Certain older forms of English actually kept trix and tor which is the Latin suffixes for gender-specific roles such as a male was an aviator and a woman was an aviatrix or a male was a gladiator and a woman was a gladiatrix.

Now this is different than the modern form of English where tor is for everyone and trix are for kids.
