I germinated this red oak about 8 years ago from an acorn and it’s now over my head - reaching for the ☀️. The ravine behind our house is dominated by Manitoba maple (the weed of trees) and non native Siberian elm so I’ve been introducing some oaks, white pine and white spruce. 🌲 #trees #nativeplants

My mission on each dog walk is to remove a little dog standing vine, from around the local trail. But racing against time as the seed pods are getting ripe.

We had our roof shingles replaced and now the rain barrel water smells like tar or hydrocarbons 😢 My theory is my native gardens and their healthy bacteria will work to treat / remediate it, rather than the roof water going right up storm drain. #gardensky #nativeplants

Something different.. was on a lake fishing with my son in Muskoka this weekend, we wondered what the heck this basketball sized gelatinous mass was, just under the water. Turns out this is a bryozoan colony: millions of zooids, multi cell, branch-like organisms approx 0.5 mm in length. #nature

As an example of just how resilient invasive buckthorn is, I cut a live one as a stake to hold up a young cottonwood. The buckthorn stake had no leaves or branches when I drove it into the ground. To my surprise it’s been leafing out, and still going strong after 2 months. #nativeplants #invasives

Maybe I’ll do a series of garden rock pics - I love placing rocks with plants, because I like geology and as a reminder of places I’ve been. This rock, scraped by glacial activity, was falling out of a 25-m tall bank of glaciolacustrine clay on the shore of Lake Ontario.
